WHAT IS SCIENCE FAIR? HOW CAN I (SHOULD I) HELP MY CHILD?
2
WHAT IS SCIENCE FAIR? Power Point Slides Science Fair Is a Process! It is Not Just A Research Project Must Get Numbers That Can Be Used In Graphs A Proposal Form Is Submitted
3
What Must My Child Do In A Science Fair Project? Ask a question for which he/she does not know the answer? What effect does microwaving have on the stem growth of radish seeds?
4
What must my child do in a science fair project? R-E-S-E-A-R-C-H! Look up sources to find information on topics listed, especially on the Proposal Form: Periodicals Encyclopedias Films Newspapers Websites Journals Children have access to Destiny Library and World Book Encyclopedia through School accounts. Set 1: encyclopedias/ dictionaries Set 2: online resources/ periodicals Set 3: biographies of scientists who impacted my research and expert interview

6
DEVELOP A HYPOTHESIS IN THE FORM OF IF, THEN…BECAUSE IF RADISH SEEDS ARE MICROWAVED FOR VARYING TIMES, THEN THOSE MICROWAVED THE LONGEST WILL NOT SPROUT BECAUSE THE ADDED HEAT WILL KILL THE SEED.
7
DESIGN THE EXPERIMENT TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS Experiment Is testable : numbers from the experiment’s outcome can be graphed Experiment has an independent variable that was deliberately changed to produce an outcome Experiment has a dependent variable that is the measurable outcome Experiment has constants that are the factors that stay the same so that the independent alone is responsible for an effect Experiment has a control that the outcome of the experiment can be compared to
8
December is Experiment Month for most students. If a student is working with human subjects, plants, or experiments needing more time, start the experiment as soon as possible.
9
INCLUDE A DETAILED MATERIALS LIST GIVE THE QUANTITY OF EACH ITEM 3 GLASS BEAKERS NAME THE SPECIFIC TYPE 1 AA BATTERY 1 AAA BATTERY Be As Clear As Possible. Include All Needed Items.
10
Write A Detailed Procedure
11
COMPOSE POWER-POINT DOCUMENT Has cover sheet Has Acknowledgement Page Discusses why the topic is important and useful Summarizes notes on topic from famous scientists Covers main points of research Cites expert’s input States the hypothesis Lists Works Cited Includes a short Appendix
12
ANALYZE DATA DRAW CONCLUSIONS GRAPH MUST HAVE DATA (NUMBERS) LOOK FOR MEAN LOOK FOR MODE LOOK FOR MEDIAN LOOK FOR RANGE COMPARE AND CONTRAST RESULTS
13

14
SHARE YOUR PROJECT WITH THE CLASS AND WITH JUDGES GRADE 6 WILL MEET WITH 2 JUDGES GRADES 7 AND 8 WILL MEET WITH 3 JUDGES STUDENTS WILL COME TO THE AWARDS CEREMONY IN THE PAC
15
HOW CAN YOU AS A PARENT HELP? BE SUPPORTIVE AND ENCOURAGING HELP CHILDREN KEEP SCHEDULES HELP PARAPHRASE RESEARCH INTO OWN WORDS HELP FIND PICTURES TO GO WITH POWER-POINT DISCUSS GRAPHS AND DATA LISTEN TO CHILDREN GIVE ORAL PRESENTATIONS BUT, PLEASE DO NOT… WRITE YOUR CHILD’S PAPERWORK DO YOUR CHILD’S BACKBOARD GET ANGRY WITH YOUR CHILD WHEN HE/SHE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND SOMETHING. HAVE THEM TALK TO THE TEACHER INSTEAD.
