2
LOCATION OF THE HEART In the Thoracic Cavity Between your lungs in the middle of your chest, behind and slightly to the left of your sternum
4
HEART IS LOCATED? a.On the left side of the body b.On the right side of the body c.Mostly on the left and partially on the right d.Mostly on the right and partially on the left
5
FUNCTION OF THE HEART
6
MEMBRANES OF THE HEART Double layered membrane called pericardium surrounds the heart like a sac The outer layer of pericardium surrounds the roots of your heart’s major blood vessels and is attached by the ligaments to the spinal cord, diaphragm and other parts of the body The inner layer of the pericardium is attached to the heart muscle Coating of fluid separates the two layers of membrane, letting the heart move as it beats
7
PERICARDIUM Heart sits within Pericardial Cavity; protected by Pericardium Pericardium produces fluid to lubricate the heart and prevent friction between the heart and its surrounding organs Pericardium hold heart into position Pericardium has 2 layers
8
STRUCTURE OF THE HEART WALL 3 Layers: 1.Epicardium – outermost layer 2.Myocardium – middle layer 3.Endocardium – inner layer
9
CHAMBERS 1.Left Atria 2.Right Atria 3.Left ventricle – largest and strongest chamber in the heart. Pushes the blood through the aortic valve and into the body 4.Right ventricle
10
FOUR VALVES Atrioventicular Valves 1.Tricuspid Valve – regulates blood flow between the right atrium and the right ventricle 2.Mitral Valve – lets oxygen rich blood from your lungs pass from the left atrium into the left ventricle Semilunar Valves 1.Pulmonary Valve – controls blood flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary arteries, which carry blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen 2.Aortic Valve – opens the way for oxygen rich blood to pass from the left ventricle into the aorta, your body’s largest artery
12
CONDUCTION SYSTEM Heart is able to set its own rhythm and conduct signals Sinoatrial (SA) Node located in the wall of the right atrium and is responsible for setting the pace of the heart Atrioventicular (AV) Node is located in the right atrium and picks up signals sent by SA node and transmits it through AV bundle
13
INTERESTING FACTS Heart weighs between 7 and 15 ounces By the end of a long life, a person’s heart may have beat more than 3.5 billion times Each day, the average heart beats 100,000 times, pumping about 2,000 gallons of blood
