Eisenhower during the 1950s was a moderate president who had no commitment to economic change or social reform. Few major laws passed by Congress. People were left alone to enjoy the prosperity of the 1950s. The major problem was that not everyone was happy and prosperous!

Anxiety about America’s position in the world, growing pressures from African-Americans and other minorities, the increasing visibility of poverty, the rising frustrations of women, and other long-suppressed discontents were beginning to make themselves felt in the nation’s public life. Ultimately, that restlessness would make the 1960s one of the most turbulent and divisive eras of the twentieth century.

In 1960 the change Americans were looking for came in the person of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Elected by a very narrow margin, Kennedy came to office promising a set of domestic reforms more ambitious than any since the New Deal, a program entitled the “New Frontier.” Many of his plans were frustrated by the fact that he had little political support in Congress.

More than any other president of the century, Kennedy made his own personality an important part of his presidency and a central focus of national attention. Nothing illustrated this more than the reaction of the country to the tragic event of November 22, 1963.

Lyndon B. Johnson became President of the United States. President Johnson later appointed a commission to look into the assassination of JFK. It became known as the Warren Commission and after months of investigation concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in shooting the President.
