[ 4 ] Establishing Three New Collaborative Innovation Working Groups Each will formulate specific recommendations for a particular innovation initiative, including scope, value, milestones –Clarify value to members –Ensure the innovation is economically viable –Develop a scalable model to positively impact a significant segment of Internet2 membership Led by member representatives –May leverage member programs and facilities –Participation encouraged for all Internet2 members Working groups will operate within a broader Internet2 Collaborative Innovation Community with a representative from each member organization New Working Groups will complement other Internet2 activities

[ 5 ] Innovation Working Group Operations Each working group will be co-led by member representatives with support from the Internet2 staff Monthly meetings with teleconference capabilities – held in various locations Working group participants will develop draft recommendations for community review coordinated by the Internet2 CINO team Operating principles – open membership, open meetings, open source results Make maximum feasible use of available prior related work

[ 7 ] End to End Trust and Security Potential areas for innovation –Scalable and extensible approaches integrating capabilities for trust, identify, privacy, security, compliance –“Chip to device to network to clouds” trust and security models Some related initiatives –Many individual member institution programs –InCommon, TIER, NET+, Internet2 CCSO initiatives –External organizations e.g., NIST, Cloud Security Alliance, the International Association of Privacy Professionals Draft Scope Statement: Develop an architecture and implementation approach to enable “End to end trust and security” for the Research & Education community Note: Address trust, identity, privacy, physical & cyber security, compliance, etc. A few potential use cases –Protection of sensitive and regulated research data –Mitigation of risks to enterprise operations –Material for new educational programs

[ 8 ] Distributed Big Data and Analytics Potential areas for innovation –Address complex issues in big data management and analytics in distributed multi-institutional operations –Management of data and metadata (multiple data types e.g., image, video, audio, standard databases) –Applications of SDN to distributed big data operations Some related initiatives –Many individual member institution programs –NSF “Techniques and Technologies for Advancing Foundations and Applications of Big Data Science & Engineering” –EDUCAUSE ECAR Cyberinfrastructure Working Group –National Academy Task Force on Cyberinfrastructure for 2020 Draft Scope Statement: Extend Internet2 capabilities in advanced networking, cloud services, and federated identity to enable members to better manage distributed big data and analytics A few potential use cases –Healthcare (genomics and clinical research data) –Smarter campus –Basic science –Security and privacy –Global economics

[ 9 ] Internet of Things (IOT) Potential areas for innovation –Cost-effective uses of advanced networking capabilities (rapid delivery of big data, low latency and jitter for remote synchronous applications, IPv6) –Integration of capabilities for compliance, security, and privacy in large-scale IoT applications Some related initiatives –Many individual member institution programs –NSF projects in “cyber-physical systems” –Industrial Internet Consortium test beds Draft Scope Statement: The IOT will incorporate many physical devices, sensors and facilities into a variety of public and private networks. This possibility presents many opportunities and challenges for our members and the world. A few potential use cases –Smart homes, campuses, and cities (including transportation, public safety, energy and power, building operations, …) –Health care (Internet of medical Things, telemedicine, genomics and proteomics, medical imagery, …) –Industrial manufacturing

[ 10 ] Next Steps Volunteer as working group co-lead or as group member Provide feedback and discussion of these plans Help develop collaboration tools for Working Group operations –First working group monthly meetings in May to develop individual working group plans, schedules, and milestones –Joint working group meetings, bimonthly, of our Collaborative Innovation Community to provide cross-group suggestions and overall coordination for Internet2 Technology Exchange presentations for October 2015 Contact CINO@internet2.edu
