A new Ltd Company - launched April 2013 100% owned by the Secretary of State for Health 3,535 assets, valued at around £5 billion Remaining an important part of the NHS managing all the former Primary Care Trust estate not transferred to providers Retaining a local focus providing strategic and operational management of the NHS estates Patient centred organisation - focusing on improving quality, efficiency and effectiveness of asset management to improve the environment for patients

3 What NHS PS Will Do Be a patient centred organisation, adopting public sector values with commercial disciplines Be a Good Corporate Citizen working for a sustainable future Have sustainability at the core of our business Minimise the impact of the company’s activities on the environment Use sustainable and renewable resources Meet Government and DH energy and sustainability targets

4 To meet this sustainability agenda NHS PS will: Audit its estate Establish its carbon footprint Target improvement Facilitate partners/stakeholders achievement of their own sustainability objectives

5 What We Will Do – Develop a SDMP First draft - framework of proposed principles rather than detailed plan of action Reflects and references SDU recommendations of good practice A web based document - hyperlinks to other guidance and case studies Includes regional summaries reflecting inheritance of the PCT/SHA SDMPs & Carbon Management Plans Intended to be a flexible document

6 What We Will Do – Develop an SDMP Sets out many proposals not all of which may be achievable in short term Facilitates engagement with other emerging organisations Will be available for NHS PS Board consideration during UK Climate Weeks (4 - 8th March) Board approval will be sought at the end of March Web launch on NHS Sustainability Day 28 th March

7 What We Will Do - Establish Capital Sustainability Enabling Fund Intend to establish fund for energy and carbon saving initiatives, demonstrating cost, qualitative benefits and achievements towards the Company’s sustainability target Intend to develop invest to save projects

8 What We Will Do - Develop Benchmarking Data Provide KPIs for building condition and energy consumption NHS PS is expected to meet SDU’s target for Carbon Reduction of reducing the 2007 carbon footprint by 10% by 2015. Possibility of NHS PS setting a higher target i.e. 15 % reduction by 2015, - this will impact on the tenants and will need your support. What We Will Do - Drive Efficiencies NHS PS can drive real efficiencies through economies of scale – the purchase of resources such as electricity

9 How We Will Benefit the NHS – An Exciting Vision Give Leadership - NHS is now faced with pressures to adopt new patient care pathways. NHS PS will respond by making the estate fit for the future and ensuring sustainability will part of that process NHS PS can start to lead the way in reducing the impact of the NHS on the environment

10 How We Will Benefit the NHS Forge a corporate identity and culture which embed sustainability principles from the outset Adapt its estate to sustain a patient centred evolving NHS Adopt a corporate agile mindset, retaining sustainability experience but receptive to innovation based on sound evaluation, judgement and legislation to ensure that NHS PS is regarded as a reliable source of best practice, an ethical landlord and expert custodian of NHS properties
