1 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: Hebrews 3:8 May 22, 2011 Rev. David B. Hanson Deaf Liberty Baptist Church Overland Park, Kansas

2 What does “Harden your Heart” Mean?  Hebrews 3:10  Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.  Do not open your heart.  Do not yield yourself.  Increase your stubbornness.

3 Why do some People Harden their Hearts?  Hebrews 3:12  Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  Have unbelief (the deceitfulness of sin).  Reject God’s Word.  Refuse to have God as their God.

4 Pharaoh with His Hardened Heart

5  Exodus 7:13  And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.  Pharaoh rejected God’s Word.  Pharaoh refused to accept the Lord as his God.  Pharaoh claimed himself as God.

7 The Jews’ Hardened Hearts

8  Numbers 14:11  And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?  The Jews rejected God’s Word and miracles.  The Jews had unbelief.  The Jews left the Lord.

9 The Christians: Hear God’s Voice  Hebrews 3:7-8  7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,  8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

10 The Christians: Watch Out for Unbelief  Hebrews 3:12-13  12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
