2 Nouns Names a person, place, thing, or idea
Common nouns – any person, place, thing, or idea Car, boy, girl, city Proper nouns – a particular person, place, thing or idea Ferrari, James, Susie, Houston

3 Singular and Plural Nouns
Singular nouns name only one person, place, thing, or idea. Plural nouns name more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

4 Rules for forming plural nouns:
Regular nouns – add only “s” girl girls desk desks door doors Nouns ending with –s, -ss, -ch, -sh, -x, -z, or –o - add “es” fox foxes church churches bush bushes class classes

5 More rules for forming plural nouns -
Nouns ending in “y” and have a consonant before the –y, change the –y to an –i and add –es baby babies lady ladies Nouns ending in “y” with a vowel before the “y”, add only –s. boy boys toy toys

6 More rules for forming plural nouns -
Nouns ending in –f or –fe, change the –f to a –v and add –es. life lives loaf loaves Some nouns are irregular and change its spelling. man men tooth teeth ox oxen child children foot feet goose geese woman women mouse mice

8 Possessive nouns show ownership.
Possessive rules: All singular nouns, no matter the ending, add apostrophe (‘) and –s. Shirt of the boy - boy’s shirt Work of the class – class’s work All plural nouns that end with –s, add only an apostrophe (‘). Purses of the ladies – ladies’ purses

9 Possessive rules continued
All plural nouns that do not end with – s, add an apostrophe (‘) and –s. Wings of the geese – geese’s wings Pants of the men – men’s pants
