Incorporating Quotes English A El Camino College
2
Quote: A quotation, often called a“quote” for short, is a word or group of words taken from an essay, article, or book written by someone else and incorporated into your essay. To show that these words are not your own but borrowed from someone else, you enclose the words in quotation marks: “ ”
3
Incorporating Quotes Using quotes effectively in your papers lends support and authority to the points you make. There are a number of methods for incorporating quotes effectively and smoothly. Whenever you quote material, it should be enclosed in quotation marks and the source of the quote should be indicated.
4
Methods of Incorporating Research (1) Parenthetical Documentation Direct Quote: “China is rapidly becoming increasingly domineering in its government” (Davis 2). Paraphrase: China’s government is tightening its grip on the people (Davis 2). (2) In-text Documentation According to Alfred Davis, author of Crimes against Humanity, “China is rapidly becoming increasingly domineering in its government.”
5
One option is to give the quote, followed by the author's last name and the page number (if available) in parentheses: “Proponents like Marilyn Stenvall, executive director of the National Association for Year-Round Education, say that the ten-week-long summer vacation is inefficient and undermines our children’s ability to achieve” (Katz 15).
6
Another option is to give the author's name, the quote, and the page number (if available) in parentheses: As Frank Morriss points out, “Mercy for the suffering or elderly could next be ‘mercy’ for the deformed, the defective, the burdensome. Those of differing values and philosophies could then be the subjects of state recognized ‘mercy’” (149).
7
If the reader is unfamiliar with the author, give the author’s name and credentials, followed by the quote and finally the page number (if available) in parentheses: According to Benson B. Roe, former chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of California at San Francisco, “it has been clearly demonstrated that when an addictive desire becomes inaccessible, it provokes irresponsible behavior to fulfill that desire. Education and support at least have a chance of controlling addiction.”
8
You can also give the author’s name, the title of the source (article, book, etc.), the quote, and the page number (if available) in parentheses. In his article “Why We Should Legalize Drugs,” Benson Roe states, “The economic incentive for drug dealers to merchandise their product aggressively is a multi-billion dollar return which has a far more powerful effect to increase substance abuse than any enforcement program can possibly do to constrain that usage.”
9
Avoid "Dropped" Quotes “Dropped quote” is a term used to describe quoted material that is not incorporated smoothly into the text of a paper. It may not be worked in grammatically. It may lack a context. It may contain pronouns that have no antecedents in your paper.
10
Quote not worked in grammatically: In his article “Why We Should Legalize Drugs,” Benson Roe describes the huge sums of money to be made in illegal drugs as “has a far more powerful effect to increase substance abuse than any enforcement program can possibly do to constrain that usage.”
11
Corrected: In his article “Why we should legalize drugs,” Benson Roe describes the huge sums of money to be made in illegal drugs as having “a far more powerful effect to increase substance abuse than any enforcement program can possibly do to constrain that usage.”
12
Quote is without a context and contains a pronoun with no antecedent: “What I am insisting must not be done is to legalize murder or suicide for the motive of mercy” (Morris 147). What is the subject under discussion? Who is “I”?
13
Corrected: Frank Morriss sums up the anti- euthanasia position by saying, “What I am insisting must not be done is to legalize murder or suicide for the motive of mercy” (Morris 147). Gives a context for the quote Supplies an antecedent for “I”
14
Electronic Source w/o Author If there is no author name for an electronic source, you must include the article title in parentheses. “Quote” (“Article Title”).
15
Review Use quotes to add support and authority to your papers. Be sure to identify any quotes and give credit to the author. Be sure to work quotes in grammatically with the rest of your sentences. Be sure to set up quotes so that they have a context and are integrated smoothly into your essay.
