1 Innovation and Enterprise
Week 5 Creativity 2 (Some of this you will have seen before but you’ll probably need a reminder…)

2 The Double Diamond (in more detail)
You are here If you leap-frog the process by coming up with final solutions before Week 6 you will find it virtually impossible to relate them to the Double Diamond Process. You haven’t been asked to find solutions yet!

3 I&E Assignment 1 Milestones
By Wk7: Chosen THE solution & developing presentation slides By Wk3: Be part of a team. Provide many Hot Potato topics By Wk5: Carefully chosen THE topic to delve further into 11:00 Deadline - Written Assignment 1 11/17/2014 2014 October November 2014 By Wk4: Expanded your Hot Potatos into sub topics By Wk6: Researched and developed MANY potential solutions By Wk2: Raise any questions regarding projects Wk8: Presentations!

4 Class Forums are now available
This will allow you to post items to the forum for your whole class to comment on or for just your team. Please do comment on the News Forum (For all 500 students taking I&E) We love to hear your views!

5 The search for solutions to the problem statement (The widening of the diamond)
You start with your defined statement - End up with as many different possible solutions to it as possible Then in the next phase you decide between them (the narrowing bit of the diamond) You need to find a way of getting the ‘as many as possible’ sorted out

6 Innovation is based on creativity (among other things)
One aspect of creativity is getting a LOT of different ideas Another aspect is getting ideas that are different and original One way is to get a lot of ideas and remove the boring ones later Another way is to deliberately stretch the area you are looking in

7 USE the METHODS!! Innowiz www.innowiz.be Methods for innovation
Four sets of processes: Problem definition Idea generation Idea selection Idea communication USE the METHODS!!

8 morphological charts The general use of a matrix in Creativity and Innovation is often known as a "Morphological" method. One method of attribute listing is called "Morphological Forced Connections". It has been suggested as a "foolproof invention-finding scheme“ Here is an example: List the attributes of the situation. Below each attribute, place as many alternates as you can think of When completed, make many random runs through the alternates, picking up a different one from each column and assembling the combinations into entirely new forms of your original subject. After all, inventions are often new ways of combining old bits and pieces. Contained in The Universal Traveler . Authors: Koberg and Bagnall

9 Example of a morphological chart for a pen
Shape / Cylinder Material Cap Ink Source Faceted Metal Attached Cap No Cartridge Square Glass No Cap Permanent Beaded Wood Retracts Paper Cartridge Sculptured Paper Cleaning Cap Cartridge made of ink No of options – in this case it is 44 – which calculates out as If we had 10 options in each column we would have a total of which is options – ie 10 thousand Example Invention: An environmental Cube Pen; one corner writes, leaving six faces for ads, calendars, photos, etc. using only wood and paper.. 256 104

10 A Morphological Chart for a Newspaper Bicycle

11 Use a problem tree And a solution tree

12 CLARIFICATION What exactly am I trying to do?
What do I want to achieve? What is my key purpose? What am I trying to say? What should the finished work be like? What exactly is the problem I’m trying to solve? What is my key idea here? How could I exploit the ideas I have? Where could this idea take me? What could I make of this idea?

13 Open and closed clarification
How can I package this product? I need a new approach to painting sky Staff turnover is too fast to get continuity on long contracts Open: I like this shape. What could I do with it? What sort of personality has this character got? How could I improve the efficiency of my business?

14 Thought-action continuum
What you are trying to achieve Values Philosophical Reasons Strategic Tactical Concrete ideas Doing it Aims WHY? Objectives Stepping up Stepping down Proposals HOW? Plans How you are going to achieve it Action Action

15 Stepping down (as part of Thought-action Continuum)
I need to design a new toy HOW? I could start by looking at what’s around at the moment I could find some manufacturers and ask them for catalogues I could use the internet

16 Stepping up (as part of Thought-action Continuum)
WHY? Because I have a friend who wants one Because I’ve been asked to So I can pass the unit So I can prove I can do design Because I like doing it WHY? I need to design a new toy

17 SIDESTEPPING Because it was designed a long time ago So?
So take pride in heritage WHY? Because it’s an old style So? SIDESTEPPING So train people to like it WHY? Because the one we make now isn’t making a profit So? Sell it for less WHY? I need to design a new toy

18 Sidestepping words UNLESS…!
NO! Asks for a circumstance where the statement no longer holds. Asks for an alternative to the statement Challenges the statement

19 Sidestepping (Unless)
Because it has too many parts Each part is cheap and easy to make WHY? Because the one we make now isn’t making a profit UNLESS…! Unless we sell more WHY? I need to design a new toy

20 Sidestepping (or) Because it has too many parts OR..!
Because the parts are too complicated WHY? Because the one we make now isn’t making a profit OR..! Because we don’t sell enough of them WHY? I need to design a new toy

21 Sidestepping (No!) NO! Because it has too many parts
Extra functions and gizmos make a selling point WHY? Because the one we make now isn’t making a profit NO! We are happy selling it at a loss WHY? I need to design a new toy

22 Decision-making compass
Reasons WHY? Evaluation IF… THEN BUT… THEREFORE… Alternatives OR…! UNLESS…! NO! Need, objective or proposed action Actions HOW? SO…?

23 Which are you? Strategist WHY? Judge IF… THEN BUT… THEREFORE…
Innovator OR…! UNLESS…! NO! Need, objective or proposed action Activist HOW? SO…?

24 In your own time Look at the available Power Point presentation on ‘How to develop a Problem Tree’ (Moodle / I&E / Resources and Creative Techniques)

25 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE… Don’t just use brainstorming or mindmapping because they are the only techniques you feel comfortable with… (A good way to be marked down) You have been shown plenty of ways to be innovative – USE THE TECHNIQUES!

26 Next week: Diamond 2 – Narrowing Selecting between ideas
