4 Books you must buy: For first year students:  English Grammar in Use Third Edition by Raymond Murphy, published by CUP.  Roald Dahl “Tales of the Unexpected”. (One of these must be presented at the oral exam)  English Vocabulary in Use by Stuart Redman Second Edition CUP (Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate level)  English Grammar in Use Supplementary Exercises by Louise Hashemi CUP (for self- study)

5 BOOKS YOU MUST BUY: For second year students:  Longman Avanced Learner’s Grammar  Short stories Reading Classics published by Blackcat (4 must be presented for the oral exam).

7 The importance of self-study: You will be spending 20 weeks in the classroom but 32 weeks out of the classroom so self-study is of the utmost importance. Here are some things you can do to study alone:  study all the grammar points in the book not covered in class  Use such sites as BBC Learning English to improve your language skills  Access newspapers on line to practise reading newspaper articles (especially the second year students) such as the Guardian, the Times, the Independent, the Economist and so on.  Access EFL websites such as Dave’s ESL Café, English-zone and Learn English to practise a variety of aspects  Use the self-access material at the faculty and the CLA
