Answer both standards and professional requirements in training: The competence and activity reference data (CARD).

PLAN - What is the CARD? Definition and recipe - The fighter pilot CARD example : method - Other examples of CARDS and training. - Conclusion

What is the CARD? The CARD is a tool used for training needs analysis. A CARD includes : - knowledge - what personnel need to know to perform their job - know-how – what personnel needs to be able to do - personal resources – what attitude / behaviour / personnel need to adopt. The CARD covers all the aspects of a job position or particular assignement : professional skills, military skills, management skills, language proficiency …

CARD recipe The CARD is like a cake which requires several cooks, ingredients, specific tools and cooking time. CARD recipe : - cooks : professional training schools, job specialists, language training specialists, - ingredients : time, open-mindness, curiosity, patience - tools : travel card, excel table, a pen (loads of note taking in perspective). - cooking time : from 4 to 6 months.

Fighter pilot CARD recipe

Step 1 : list all the things a fighter pilots needs to - know (theory knowledge eg NATO standards, IACO standards, aircraft maintenance documentation, weather hazards etc) - be able to do (=know how, skills eg use of commands, formation take- off, landing, maintain altitude etc) - be (required attitudes eg : decision making, team oriented, disciplined, dedicated, flexible)

“ Followership ” Codewords A/A strikes “Prioritize actions” “Map reading” “Take-off” “Refuelling” “En route” “ Rerouting ” “Bartending” “ Weather data” “ Unusual situation” “ Ejection ” “Survival procedures” “ICAO procedures” “VFR” “NATO procedures” “Landing” “Beating the Brits at darts” “Radiotelephony” “Leadership”

General skillKnowledgePersonal resources? BASIC SKILLS KEY SKILL 1. 9 Step 2 : for each item, list all the situations when English language is required.

General skillKnowledgePersonal resourcesLanguage proficiency BASIC SKILLS KEY SKILL 1. BASIC MISSION PREPARATION Collect useful information (weather etc)  Methods for data collecting  Team work  Autonomy Read weather information in English Communicate effectively with air operation personnel Study flight path (IFR / VFR), prepare for rerouting, anticipate weather phenomena  Flying rules applicable to the flying zone  Handle workload so as to be attentive and prioritize the tasks  Planning and anticipation Read maps indications in English XXXXXXXXX KEY SKILL 2. BASIC PILOTING Operate plane on the ground  Technical dodumentation  Communicate accurately  Team work Read technical documentation in English Communicate effectively with technicians VFR (visual flying rules) flying  Read national & international VFR maps  Basic procedures applicable to the plane  Deal with stress  Take initiatives  Decision making  Task hierarchy Radiotelephony Read maps indications in English XXXXXXXXX

Step 3 : list the language standards or documentation needed.

Language skills Standards / Reference RadiotelephonyICAO Communicate with aircraft technician Aircraft documentation / airworthiness Read instruments Aircraft documentation / airworthiness Communicate with air operation personnel STANAG 6001 XXXXXXXXX

Step 4 : design language training.

As far as pilot training is concerned, the programme is organized as follows : -Phase 1 : Basic skills -Pahse 2 : Basic + technical skills -Phase 3 : Basic + technical + tactical skills So as to correspond to the steps of the professionnal training.

The method can be applied to any trade. Language training programmes can be designed differently according to the CARD, the trade, the way professionnal training is organized : For instance :  Transit agents : according to the level of responsibility  Commandos, fire fighters : according to the themes (modular training)  Aircraft technicians, ATCs : from plain to technical language.

CARD assets  exhaustive study : language needs analysis is complete  close relationship with the professional environement and training – language becomes an operational / military skill in itself (not only for English teachers)  language training can then be embedded within the technical / professional training  all stakeholders work from the same document – common reference  Perfect tool for training needs analysis can also be used for other purposes - eg recruitment, career management etc. CARD drawback  time consuming task

Roger*? * l adies and gentlemen, I hope this presentation was clear and I am ready for your questions if you have any.
