1 Arizona State Legislature Internship Opportunities

2 ELIGIBILITY Applicants must be candidates for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of application. Candidates for a Bachelor’s degree must have earned at least 75 hours at the end of the fall semester.

3 FOR DECEMBER GRADUATES Enroll in Graduate College as a non degree seeking student Pay enrollment fee Receive 9 graduate credits All academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.

4 PROGRAM OVERVIEW Upon successful completion of the Internship, Interns receive: $4,200 stipend (biweekly paycheck) Regular tuition/University fee waiver However, students are responsible for personal fees or charges (e.g., Honors/Graduate College, bookstore charges or parking tickets). 12 units of academic credit are earned by undergraduate students and 9 hours of graduate credit Students from outside Maricopa County are eligible to Apply for reimbursement of qualified relocation expenses.

5 INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES The internship will require at least 40 hours per week at the State Capitol in Phoenix. Early and late night meeting often occur and your attendance will be required. There are no semester breaks and no time off given during the session. Due to the workload and placement it will be impossible to take classes during the Spring semester.

6 LEGISLATIVE SESSION The Legislative Internship Program is offered during the spring semester. Orientation begins Monday, January 7, 2013 Internship ends on Friday, May 10, 2013

7 APPLICATION PROCESS To complete or download the online application go to www.azleg.gov/internshipintropage.asp Applications must be typed Must include: An unofficial transcript current university and each institution if more than 6 credits were awarded. A personal statement 300 words or less Two current academic or professional letters of recommendation. Do not include letters from family members or friends. If applying to the Governor’s Office and/or the Supreme Court, a current resume is required.

8 APPLICATIONS PROCESS You must submit your completed application in person and schedule an interview appointment with Isabel Contreras or Cherie McCollum Parks, in the Douglass, Building 200W. Application due on or before September 28, 2012, 5:00 p.m.

9 INITIAL INTERVIEWS AT THE UofA UA Interview October 10, 11, 12 All interviews will be 15 minutes, between 8am and 5pm You will be interviewed by a panel of 10-15 people, representing the House, Senate, Governor’s Office, State Court, and the University of Arizona.

11 MANDATORY LUNCHEON December 6 th reading day Complete paperwork for tuition/fee wavier and credits

12 REGISTRATION Since priority registration comes before you learn whether you are accepted for the internship, you will already have a class schedule for spring. Isabel or Cherie will drop your classes and register you for the proper internship credits. Isabel and Cherie will work with Financial Aid/Bursar’s Office to have all tuition and fee waivers processed.

13 GRADING You are responsible for understanding the implications of accepting the internship on your progress toward graduation You are responsible for determining which departments will accept Legislative Internship credits and provide Isabel or Cherie with the information

14 GRADING Grade for the Legislative Internship will be based on the “extended pass-fail” version of alternative grading The only grades available are the special grades of S, P, F. Grades of S (superior), P (pass), and F (fail) are not included in the calculation of the GPA, nor do they count toward meeting the criteria for dean’s list, honorable mention, or academic distinction. Failure to complete the internship for any reason may affect the amount of the stipend you receive and may result in a failing grade and/or no class credit.

15 GRADING Grades are based on several factors (which will be discussed in greater detail during the intern orientation sessions in Phoenix for those selected). –Level of participation and attendance –Quality of performance, as determined by your supervisor reported in mid-term and final performance assessments –Term paper, with content and structure defined by department assigning the final grade for credit

16 FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIP INFORMANTION The Legislative Intern Tuition Award cannot be combined with any tuition award including: –Wildcat Excellence Tuition Award –National Merit Finalist Tuition Award –National Scholar Tuition Award –Regents High Honors (AIMS) Tuition Award –AZ Excellence Tuition Award –All Arizona Academic Team Tuition Award

17 FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIP INFORMANTION Students offered any of the aforementioned awards: –Will receive the higher dollar amount award offer –Foregone award cannot be deferred for future semesters A student is limited to 8 total semesters of all undergraduate tuition awards at UA.

18 FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIP INFORMANTION The Az Legislative Intern Tuition Award will be reduced if the Qualified Tuition Reduction (QTR) is used (a faculty/staff benefit). The Legislative Intern Tuition Award cannot be combined with ROTC Tuition Awards and some departmental tuition awards depending on the type and the amount of the departmental award.

19 FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIP INFORMANTION The Spring 2013 Az Legislative Intern Tuition Award will cover: *Depending on your confirmed Residency (determined by the Residency Classification Office), career, & # units of internship credit. ** This award does not cover Honors College differential or personal fees.
