2 Why is Science Important? Science makes kids (and adults!) more aware of the world around them. Science supports concept development, problem solving skills, and process skills.

3 How do we learn science? By Knowing Scientific content and knowledge By Doing Scientific process and skills

4 How do we do science? Inquiry! Approach is student-centered, active vs. passive Uses problem solving and critical thinking skills Develops skills that can be applied to future school or work situations Allows opportunities for reflection Is more engaging and interesting

7 Science at Home – it’s already happening! Cooking Weather awareness Caring for living things Observing your world Using technology What else is your family already doing?

8 A simple observation activity: Draw 1 of the following: A turtle, a squirrel, Or a rabbit Then….

9 A simple observation activity: Draw the same animal again. This time, pay close attention to the following: The shape of it’s body, It’s features (eyes, ears, etc), It’s body covering, How is this drawing different?
