2 *Title of the book: We are all alike We are all different Written and Illustrated by the Cheltennham Elementary School Kindergartners Published by Scholastic

3 *This is a book written by young children for young children. The kindergartners at Cheltenham Elementary School wrote this book to initiate awareness and exploration of similarities and differences. These children describe the likenesses and differences among themselves.

4 Preschool children: 4 to 7 years old This book will help teachers to create awareness among the students of differences. How children can be alike inside and how can be different outside. It also will help teachers to work with the students accepting differences and build tolerance.

5 *To create awareness that we are all alike, we all have hearts and brains; but we are all different we do not have the same color of hair, skin and eyes. *We are all alike inside, but we do not feel the same way. We show and demonstrate our feelings in different ways. These differences make us special not bad or wrong. *To promote diversity, individuality and tolerance.

6 By the time this lesson is completed the students will: *The students will be aware that around the world are differences. These differences can be physical, emotional etc. *Students will understand that everybody is unique in their own. *Students will be aware that among themselves are also differences. Color of eyes, color of skin, color of hair, size etc. *Students will be aware that even though they study in the same class, they have different families. They will learn about their peers’ families and about their friends. Students will learn to accept differences, to respect them and they will learn that accepting differences make us more tolerant.

8 We are all alike and different: Through an experiment with two eggs, one white and one brown, children will create awareness of the similarities and the differences. Materials: One brown egg, One White egg and a bowl Plan: Following a discussion with the children about people are alike( We all have two eyes and hair ) and how we differ ( blue eyes, Vs brown eyes, long hair Vs short hair). Break each egg in to the bowl and dispose of shell. Reflection: Can the students tell which is which? No, because just like people even though we may look different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside.

9 We are all alike and different: Through an activity about observing the students in a mirror they will draw and color themselves how they are. Materials: Mirror, paper, yarn, glue, crayons Plan: Encourage the students to look in their mirrors to find out the color of eyes and hair. The students will look themselves in a mirror with every detail; they will draw themselves their faces in a big cupboard, with the color of their eyes, the style and the color of their hair. Reflections: What makes you special of unique? The students will pair with another student and discuss their physical differences. Discuss and encourage the students to discover that everyone is different; however some of us have similarities.

10 We are all alike and different: Which color is your skin? Through this activity the students will discover the color of their skin. We are a mixture of colors. Material: Paint Plan: With a partner the students will mix paints until find the color of their skin. Reflection: The students will discuss the differences of color of their skin. Does the color of our skin make us different from our friends?

11 We are all alike and different: A project about my family: Through this activity the students will find out that everybody has a family but there are differences among the them. Materials: A hand out with some questions about themselves and their families. What is your favorite food? What is your favorite game? How many are the members of your family? Where are your parents from? Where do you live? What is the favorite activity to do in family? Discussions: Each student can do a simple presentation about themselves and their families. Discuss the similarities and the differences among the students.

12 We are all alike and different: Everybody shows their feelings in a different way. Plan: Discuss with the students the different ways they show their feelings. ( happy, sad, upset, scared) Discussions: Respect the way people show their feelings. We need to respect different feelings and being tolerant with the other.

14 Children will create their own class book We are all alike We are all different. Children will write about their families. They will answer the questions and share them with their peers. Children will write about their feelings. When I am happy I ….. When I am sad I …… When I am upset I ….. When I am scared I ……

15 Children will use graphs with their characteristics. Color of their eyes Color of their hair Children will use graph to show how many members of a family each student has.

16 Children will make their own portrait.

17 *Discuss with the students some similarities and differences that are among themselves. Clarify the students that these can be physical or in the way you act. *Ask the students about some situations they think they have been tolerant with their peers. *Discuss with the students what would they do if there is a friend that is different? *Discuss with the students what you would feel if you were different than your friends or you act different than them and they bully you.

18 The assessment will be under observation and random questioning. The teacher will be observing if children are respecting the differences among their friends and if they are tolerant to each other.
