NCGS: Positioning NC today and for the future! North Carolina Geodetic Survey Maintenance of a CORS/RTN infrastructure

CORS installation components Planning o NGS guidelines o Hardware o Monumentation o Software o Communication Installation o Documentation o Submittal to NGS Guidelines for New and Existing Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) www.ngs.noaa.gov/PUBS_LIB/CORS_guidelines.pdf National Geodetic Survey National Ocean Survey, NOAA Silver Spring, MD 20910 January 2013

CORS receiver maintenance GNSS receiver o Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) − Battery maintenance (keep maintenance log) o Receiver location − Protect cable connections − Select a location that is away from the main traffic area of the room − Near power source − Secure cables o Document firmware updates − Inform NGS if site is a National CORS o Surge protection − Properly grounded o Display contact information

CORS antenna maintenance GNSS antenna o Keep antenna surface clean o Confirm orientation of antenna o Monitor condition of radome (if installed) o Lighting protection − Grounded properly − Cable connections protected from rain/snow o Antenna cable − Connections (sealed properly) − Check for sun damage − Routing

CORS hardware maintenance Hardware maintenance o Monumentation/mounting − Damage from elements − Indications of tampering with mounting device

Site maintenance Any new obstructions o Buildings o Towers o Fences Any new signal transmitters Stability o Any construction activity near CORS Update photos (submit to NGS if the site is a National CORS)

Monumentation maintenance Ground monumentation o Check for: − Damage − Parking or traffic patterns − Indication of new construction near site

Monumentation (building mount) Building mount o Any damage to fasteners o Any damage from rain/snow o Evidence of tampering Tools required for maintenance o Lift truck o Ladder

CORS administration IT security Latency o Bandwidth o Transmission medium o Router and switch performance o Firewall o Wireless network voice/data traffic Servers o Age o Capacity o Maintenance up to date
