Background of the League
The League of Nations was set up in 1920 Membership: When the League was created, there were 42 original member countries. By 1930, membership had increased to nearly 60. However, at any one time, several of the larger & more powerful nations were not members, including The USA, who refused to join. The defeated nations (including Germany), who at first, were not allowed to join. Russia, who was not allowed to join because of its Communist government. The Covenant of the League: The Covenant laid out the aims of the League, which were to Prevent aggression by any nation. Encourage co-operation between nations. Work towards international disarmament. Improve the living and working conditions of all peoples. The League was built upon the idea of collective security. This meant that the members of the League could prevent war by acting together to protect and defend the interests of all nations.

The Structure of the League
The League of Nations was divided into these main areas: The Assembly The Council The Permanent Court of International Justice The Secretariat The International Labour Organisation Health Organisation Commissions-Slavery and Refugees Draw a diagram to show the structure of the League. For each area draw a small image to show their role. Next to it, explain what they do in no more than 20 words.

B – Country X has complained that Country Y is invading it and is calling for action. C – A trade union is complaining that its members aren’t being given their rights. E – Country P is complaining that the League is spending too much time dealing with Health. F – Country M is saying it’s being forced to pay unfair duties on the goods it sells to Country N. Framework for failure from the start
Most countries hoped the Americans would lead the League- The American Senate voted NOT TO JOIN. Read your text book to find out why and put this in your notes Why would this be a weakness from the start The defeated countries –who were- were not allowed to join. Enforcing the Leagues rules
