EXIF: EC +.7, f/5, 1/30 This is even a ‘hair’ dark. EXIF: EC +.7, f/5.6, 1/15 Both shots taken within minutes of each other using similar DSLR digitals and the same lighting.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Fine Tune: Starter ideas, come up with more… 1.I hope you noticed how different the two images look even though they were shot in the same lighting condition. 2.The difference start with the subjects skin tone difference. Edward is slightly darker than Janie. 3.Then there is also the matter of the subjects face angle in relationship to the light source. Edward is facing more into the camera away from the light. 4.The exposure is also an important consideration. Edward’s exposure is less than Janie’s. 5.What is the simplest thing to look at in terms of exposure other than the subjects?

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Bridge: Image management Powerful utility with 4 resizable window panes. 1.File management 2.Enlargement 3.Metadata – EXIF & 4.Slide Viewer/Sorter EC 0, f/7.1, 1/180 with Contrast set to Low’. EC -.3, f/7.1, 1/100 Both shots taken at the same location but 2 hrs apart. The 2 hrs and the Low contrast setting made a difference in the end effect of the mid-day lighting.
5
Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Fine Tune: 1.Team discuss how and why of the differences in the two images. 2.Be sure to discus the differences in the subjects. 3.Don’s camera being set to Low Contrast is also a relevant factor. 4.How relevant is the difference in tools? Don used his DSLR and Natalia used her point and shoot. Please don’t read beyond this point.

Seriously under exposed and multiple lights. Avoid under exposure, multiple and wrong direction lighting.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Bottom Line: Use your thinking and trust your feeling 1.You need to learn how to use your tool. Important part of that is to learn how to interpret your LCD correctly. 2.You also have to practice enough to let your body start to drive the camera while you focus on telling the story. 3.Learning your tool is about thinking and practice. The ability to see is a feeling thing. 4.The real world is about constant change. Thinking solutions are too slow to deal with them. Using your feeling will allow you to fluidly interact with nature to MAKE images.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Puzzle: This shot doe not do justice to Natalia. Look at the EXIF date and figure out how this image could have looked better. There are three (3) specific facts that I want you to find amongst the EXIF data. Do this as team work and spend about 15 minutes discussing this puzzle...

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Hit the Bull’s Eye: Bit severe like my example, but it works as a passport (ID) shot. Please make your expression softer for your passport shot.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Passport Crop: Passport pictures are square. To achieve that image shape, I applied a black Photoshop Frame Layer. The lighting is a bit flat but it works well as a Passport shot.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Detail: Impressive Edbert used the Sony Alpha A350 to take this extremely smooth tone and critically sharp shot. Excellent exposure and color balance. This will serve as a very good reference image.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Assignment Feedback Summary: If you did not end up with a reliable reference image before this self portrait Passport assignment, you need to succeed this time. Following the assignment ‘Requirements’ precisely will make it easier for you to succeed. Goo luck…
