3 Covenant with God Arrival at Sinai 19:1,2 3 rd month after Israelites left Egypt Left Rephidim and enter the Desert of Sinai Camp in the desert in front of the mountain

4 Covenant with God God Promises Covenant 19:3-6 Moses went up to God Lord called him from the mountain Say to the house of Jacob; the people of Israel You have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles’ wings to Myself

5 Covenant with God God Promises Covenant (cont.) 19:3-6 If… – You obey me fully – Keep my covenant Then… – Out of all nations you will be my treasured possession – Although the whole earth is Mine, you will be kingdom of priests and a holy nation

6 Covenant with God Israelites Agree to Covenant 19:7-9 Moses went back and summoned the elders Set before them all the words the Lord commanded People all responded together “We will do everything the Lord has said.”

8 Covenant with God Consecration of the People 19:10-15 Go to people and consecrate them today and tomorrow; wash their clothes and be ready on the 3 rd day The Lord will come down on Mt. Sinai for people to see

9 Covenant with God Consecration of the People (cont.) 19:10-15 Limits: Do not go up or touch foot of mountain Penalty: Put to death by stoning or arrows (untouched) All clear when rams’ horn sounds

10 Covenant with God Moses Meets God on Mt. 19:16-25 Morning of 3 rd day, thunder and lightening, thick cloud over mountain, a loud trumpet blast Everyone in camp trembled Moses led people out of camp to meet God; they stand at the foot of the mountain

11 Covenant with God Moses Meets God on Mt. (cont.) 19:16-25 Mt. Sinai covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire Smoke billowed like from a furnace Whole mountain tremble violently Trumpet sounds louder and louder

12 Covenant with God Moses Meets God on Mt. (cont.) 19:16-25 Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him Lord descends to the top and calls Moses up Go down and warn people not to come up; the priests must consecrate themselves

(cont.) 19:16-25 Moses – The people cannot come up, You have warned us Lord – Go down and bring Aaron up with you Priests and people must not force their way through to come up or He will break out against them So Moses went down to the people and told them

15 Covenant with God Ten Commandments Given (cont.) 20:1-17 II (cont.) – God punishes the children for the sins of their fathers to the 3 rd and 4 th generation; but show love to a 1000 generations of those that love Him and keep His commandments

16 Covenant with God Ten Commandments Given (cont.) 20:1-17 III – You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain – For the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who take His name in vain

18 Covenant with God Ten Commandments Given (cont.) 20:1-17 V – Honor your father and your mother – So you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you VI – You shall not murder

21 Covenant with God People Afraid of God 20:18-20 When people witnessed the thunder & lightening, sounding trumpet, and mountain in smoke they trembled with fear Stood afar off and said to Moses, you speak for us and He will listen; but do not have God speak to us lest we die

22 Covenant with God People Afraid of God (cont.) 20:18-20 Moses said, do not fear for God has come to test you so that the fear of God may be with you and keep you from sinning So the people stood afar off while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was

23 Covenant with God Instructions for Altar 20:21-26 Lord to Moses – Tell the Israelites you have seen for yourself that I have spoken to you from heaven. Do not make any gods to go alongside Me; do not make gods of silver or gold

24 Covenant with God Instructions for Altar (cont.) 20:21-26 Make an altar of earth for Me and sacrifice your burnt offerings and peace (fellowship) offerings; your sheep, goats, and cattle Wherever I cause My name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you

25 Covenant with God Instructions for Altar (cont.) 20:21-26 If you make an altar of stones for Me, do not build with dressed (cut) stones; if you use tools you have profaned it Do not go up to My altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it

26 Covenant with God Angel Sent for Guidance 23:20-22 Behold I am sending an angel before you to bring you to the place I have promised Pay attention, listen, do not rebel My Name is in him If you listen carefully and do all, then I will be an enemy to your enemies

27 Covenant with God Promises and Blessings 23:23-33 Angel will bring you to land of A,H,P,C,H,J I (God) will wipe them out Do not worship their gods; tear down their sacred places Worship God and be blessed with food & water, no sickness, no miscarriages, no barren, full life span

28 Covenant with God Promises and Blessings (cont.) 23:23-33 God’s terror will be ahead of them, enemies will turn their back and run, the hornet will be sent ahead of you But not driven out in a single year because the land will become desolate and wild animals will be too numerous

29 Covenant with God Promises and Blessings (cont.) 23:23-33 Little by little enemies driven out so Israel can increase enough to inhabit the land God will set borders: – Red Sea to the sea of Philistia (Mediterranean) – Desert to the River (Euphrates)

30 Covenant with God Promises and Blessings (cont.) 23:23-33 People will be handed over to you and you will drive them out Do not covenant with them or their gods Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin and the their worship to their gods will be a snare to you

31 Covenant with God Elders Summoned to Worship 24:1,2 Lord to Moses – Come up; you, Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and 70 of the elders All but Moses are to worship at a distance The people may not come up with him

32 Covenant with God Israelites Accept Covenant 24:3-8 Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws They responded, “All the words which the Lord has said we will do.” Moses then wrote it down

33 Covenant with God Israelites Accept Covenant (cont.) 24:3-8 Next morning Moses built a 12 stone altar representing the 12 tribes Sent young men to offer burnt offerings and peace offerings of oxen Moses puts ½ blood in bowls, ½ sprinkled on altar

34 Covenant with God Israelites Accept Covenant (cont.) 24:3-8 Moses reads the Book of the Covenant They responded, “All the words which the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.” Moses sprinkles blood on people “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.”

35 Covenant with God Elders See God’s Glory 24:9-11 Moses, Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and 70 elders go up and see the Lord Under his feet was a paved work of sapphire, clear as the sky But God did not raise His hand against these leaders; so they saw God and ate and drank

36 Covenant with God Moses Called to Mountain 24:12-14 Lord to Moses – Come up and stay and I will give you tablets of stone with the law and commands I have written for their instruction Moses and Joshua (aide) go up Aaron, Hur, and 70 elders stay and wait; to answer any dispute from people that may arise

40 Covenant with God Laws of the Covenant (cont.) 21 - 23:19 Responsibility for property 22:1-15 – Theft and restitution, liability of borrower, etc. Moral and ceremonial principles 22:16-31 – Fornication, sorcery, beastiality, worship to other gods, treatment of strangers, widows, orphans, reviling God, cursing rulers, delaying offerings, eating meat killed by beasts

41 Covenant with God Laws of the Covenant (cont.) 21 - 23:19 Justice for all 23:1-9 – Defamation, mobs, partiality, aid, bribes, hospitality to strangers, etc. The law of Sabbaths 23:10-13 – 6 years sow and gather from land; 7 th year land lies fallow for poor and animals – 6 days work; 7 th day rest

42 Covenant with God Laws of the Covenant (cont.) 21 - 23:19 Three annual Feasts 23:14-19 – Feast of Unleavened Bread, in month of Abib – Feast of Harvest, firstfruits of labor – Feast of Ingathering, at the end of harvest (year)
