3. Hurricane Katrina was the largest and 3rd strongest hurricane ever recorded to make landfall in the US.

4. Katrina peaked at a Category 5 hurricane, with winds up to 175 mph.

5. In New Orleans, levees were designed for Category 3, but Katrina was a Category 5

6. The final death toll was at 1,836. More than half of these victims were senior citizens. 705 people are reported as still missing as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

7. Hurricane Katrina affected over 15 million people in different ways varying from having to evacuate their homes, rising gas prices, and economy suffering.

8. An estimated 80% of New Orleans was under water, up to 20 ft deep in places.

9. Hurricane Katrina caused $81 billion in property damages

10. Hurricane Katrina impacted about 90,000 square miles

11. There were a lot of hazards besides the water and wind after Katrina passed through. There were fires and explosions from exposed gas lines and electric wires were down too. A number of people were electrocuted days after the hurricane.

12. After Hurricane Katrina many refugees were taken to the Astrodome for shelter, there were very horrible living conditions

13. Shortly after the hurricane moved away on August 30, 2005, some residents of New Orleans who remained in the city began looting stores. Many were in search of food and water that were not available to them through any other means, as well as non-essential items

14. Many committees were put together to help the hurricane Katrina damage such as the red cross

15. Over seventy countries pledged monetary donations or other assistance

16. The storm caused oil spills from 44 facilities throughout south-eastern Louisiana, which resulted in over 7 million US gallons of oil being leaked.

17. On September 15th President Bush indicated that the federal government will pay most of the costs associated with the rebuilding of areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
