Need to Know Nutritious Foods Provide the body with vitamins and minerals needed for energy to play and grow Includes fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy A variety of nutritious foods, (along with staying physically active), will contribute to a healthy lifestyle

Need to Know Unhealthy Foods Foods that are high in sugar, sodium, and fat are not as nutritious and should be eaten less often Too many unhealthy foods, (along with not being physically active), Can contribute to health problems - Obesity - Diabetes - Heart Disease - Other Chronic Illnesses

Nice to Know “One in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese.” High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and elevated blood cholesterol levels are a few of the health problems seen early in obese children “Obese children are more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.”

Essential Skills Identify nutritious foods and begin to understand why they are healthy. Identify unhealthy foods and begin to understand they are not as healthy. Understand that eating a variety of nutritious foods will lead to a healthy body and life.

Essential Skills Students should be able to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy types of foods Give examples of healthy food choices - fruits - vegetables - whole grains - proteins Give examples of unhealthy food choices - sweets - fatty foods - sodas
