Areas of Trapezoids Geometry Unit 4, Lesson 2
2
Trapezoids The bases of a trapezoid are the parallel sides
The legs are the non-parallel sides The height is the perpendicular distance between the two parallel bases. base (b1) leg height (h) leg Base (b2)
3
Theorem 5-8: Area of a Trapezoid
The area of a trapezoid is half the product of the height and the sum of the lengths of the bases. A = ½ h(b1 + b2)
4
Example: Find the area of a trapezoid with the height of 7 cm, and bases of 12 cm and 15 cm.
5
Example: 5 4 2 5 Area = 20.8
6
Real World Example Approximate the area of Arkansas by finding the area of the trapezoid shown.
