10. Role I: Formulate imaginative strategic research ideas that meet the grand challenges of today and tomorrow that have the potential to improve society, the environment, and quality of live. Goal: Create a highly interdisciplinary research climate which is internationally renowned as a world class source of knowledge and leadership What should the platforms do?

11. Role II: The platforms provide fora that stimulate effective planning and response to large, cross- disciplinary challenges and associated research calls within each of the areas. Goal: Increased success in large, complex research applications What should the platforms do?

12. Role III: Communicate, demonstrate and market the academic, social and economic impact of KTH research on society. Goals: Strengthen the profile of KTH as an international leader in developing new technology, policies, and systems that will make the world a better place to be. What should the platforms do?

Role IV: The platforms provide input for the planning of large scale critical research infrastructure at KTH as well as the planning of interdisciplinary faculty hires in cooperation with appropriate school deans as input to Rektor Goal: Proactively ensure that long-term needs are met for critical infrastructure and new interdisciplinary hires What should the platforms do?
