ABOUT BOOKS
2
Hello. I am a BOOK WORM. If you love books & reading, you are a Book Worm too! Today we are going to learn about parts of a book & information about a book.
3
The side of a book with the binding is called the SPINE. First, a book has a FRONT COVER & a BACK COVER. The heavy paper or leather is called the BINDING. Usually the TITLE (name) of a book is on the spine and the front cover.
4
Sometimes an expensive book has an extra paper cover called a JACKET. Books with a very heavy cover are called HARDCOVER or HARDBOUND. Books with a soft paper cover are called PAPERBACKS.
5
The Subtitle gives more information about what the book is about. For example, Dubai: City of Dreams. “Dubai” is the Title & “City of Dreams” is the Subtitle. Sometimes a book has both a TITLE and a SUBTITLE.
6
A person who writes books is called an AUTHOR. Sometimes more than one person writes a book. They are called CO-AUTHORS. If there are many authors, the person who manages them is called an EDITOR.
7
Sometimes a book is appears in a new language. A person who changes the language of a book is called a TRANSLATOR.
8
The person who does the drawings is called the ILLUSTRATOR. The person who takes photographs is called the PHOTOGRAPHER. Many books have photographs or drawings.
9
The company that makes and sells a book is called the PUBLISHER. Note the CITY where is publisher is located. You might need this information later.
10
... sometimes there are different EDITIONS, or versions, of a book. Note the YEAR a book was published. This is important because... How do you know ? Look at the year.
11
All books have a special number called an ISBN. It is 10 or 13 digits long. For example, 981 0 789 789 789. This means International Standard Book Number.
12
There is a TITLE PAGE and a COPYRIGHT PAGE. The first few pages of a book are called the FRONT MATTER. On the Copyright Page, you will find the name of the publisher, the city, the year & the ISBN.
13
A book is divided into parts called CHAPTERS. So, the chapters are listed in the Contents. Next, you will find the CONTENTS or the TABLE OF CONTENTS.
14
Next you sometimes find ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS or DEDICATION. This is when the author wants to thank someone for helping him or her write the book. Sometimes this is the wife, husband or mother of the author.
15
The main part of the book is called the TEXT. For example, An APPENDIX, a GLOSSARY, an INDEX & a BIBLIOGRAPHY or REFERENCE LIST. At the end of the book, you find the BACK MATTER.
16
For example, in an English Grammar Book, there might be list of irregular verbs. An APPENDIX is a list of important information. Another example, in a geography book, there might be a list of countries and capital cities.
17
It is like a dictionary. It lists important words that are used in the book. What is a GLOSSARY ? For example, a book about computers would have a Glossary with special words about computers.
18
What is an INDEX ? An Index will help you find information on a topic quickly. An Index is a list of the most important topics in a book with the page numbers where you can find the topics.
19
This is a list of all the books or other sources that the author used when writing the book. You will write a Bibliography too when you have a school project. Finally, what is a BIBLIOGRAPHY or REFERENCE LIST ?
20
Ask your teacher or your friendly librarian if you have any questions. I hope this helps you understand some information about books.
