 Tell the World Bridgette Keene James Madison University NSG 463: Professional Role Transition

Tell the World  I set up my “tell the world” project with a private Christian school that is near my house called “Faith Christian School.”.  I had a preliminary meeting with the President of the lower school in September and discussed my project and what my agenda would be for the class.  She then let me select which class I wanted to teach and allowed me to choose between first and second graders.

 I chose Samantha Jordan’s first grade class to be the audience to my project.  There were 17 students in Sam Jordan’s class.  I performed my “tell the world” teaching project on November 12 th from 1-2 pm.

I wanted the kids to have an active learning experience.  I ordered penlights and stethoscopes from EBAY  I went online and ordered free nursing promotional material by Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson sent coloring books, magnets, and book covers.

Future Nurses?

I enjoyed my time with the students so much. I taught them how and where to listen to heart sounds. I also taught them how and where to listen to breath sounds. We also discussed how to listen to abdominal “belly” sounds. We used penlights to check the reactivity of our pupils. At the end of discussion we did a hand washing demonstration. I taught them to use lots of friction when washing their hands with soap and water. I also taught them to sing happy birthday twice while they wash their hands and this is the correct amount of time to wash (20 seconds).

What does a nurse do?  Nurses help to alleviate pain  Nurses teach you how to prevent sickness  Nurses keep you warm and safe after surgery  Nurses hold your hand when you are scared  Nurses give you medications to make you feel better

Where does a nurse work?  Hospitals  Clinics  Homes  Offices  Schools  Many other places!

Now let me show you how to use a few nursing tools

This is a stethoscope and here is how to use one. Has anyone used one of these before? Hold your hand across your chest to pledge allegiance to the flag. This is where your heart is located. You hold it across your heart and be very quiet and you will hear, “bump, bump, bump, bump.”

Can you hear your heartbeat? I can help you so you can hear yours better. Put the diaphragm right there on the left side of your chest. If you hold just your hand there, you may be able to feel your heartbeat from the outside. Now just listen for a few moments. Do you hear it?

Let’s talk about what else we can hear. Abdominal “belly” Sounds Lung “breath” sounds Go ahead and take a deep breath while holding your stethoscope up to your chest. You should be able to hear the air go in and out of your lungs. As we breathe in our lungs go up and down.

Have you had lunch recently? Lets try and listen to your abdominal “belly” sounds. Hold the diaphragm down low over your tummy and you might hear your belly growl. If you are hungry you may hear tinkering sounds. Is anyone hungry? Can you hear it?

We found many different sounds

Does anyone know what this is called?

Sphygmomanometer  It is called a sphygmomanometer but I just call it a blood pressure cuff.  This is how we monitor a persons blood pressure to see if it is within a healthy range  Having a high or low blood pressure can be dangerous  Are there any volunteers for me to take their blood pressure?

Can I take your blood pressure?

Let’s talk about hand washing  Let’s talk about how to wash our hands and for how long.  Let’s also talk about hand washing vs. hand sanitizer

Hand sanitizer vs. hand washing

Hand washing  Always use soap and water when hand washing  Use lots of friction when washing to get rid of germs  Remember to get in between your fingers and the top of hand up to wrists  Dry hands thoroughly and don’t touch the doorknob with clean hands

Wash for 20 seconds  Make sure you wash for the 20 seconds  You can sing yourself or someone else happy birthday two times  This is the correct amount of time to wash to effectively kill germs

Hand washing  Always wash your hands with soap and water when it is available  Only use hand sanitizer when sink, soap, and water is not available  When hands are visibly soiled use soap and water instead  Washing with soap and water is preferred over hand gels

Let’s wrap it up

Does anyone have any questions?

Thank you Mrs. Jordan’s First Grade Class! I hope you will consider nursing as a profession some day.
