Transitive Intransitive Transitive verbs are action verbs that have an object to receive that action. I baked some cookies. I rode the bicycle. I gave you the doll. Objects of the verb are in bold. Intransitive verbs are active verbs, but the do not have an object receiving the Action. The book fell. The horses galloped. I walked to the park today. The child will nap until 2:00. Hint: If there is a prepositional phrase after the verb, there is no object receiving the action of the verb, so the verb is intransitive. Transitive vs. Intransitive Verbs

Action Verbs Linking Verbs Action verbs are verbs that tells what action someone or something is performing. The happy cat | looked for the ball. "Looked" functions as an action verb. Linking verbs are verbs that do not show action; instead, the linking verb renames or describes the subject. The cat looked happy. "Looked" functions as a linking verb. If a verb is a linking verb, am, is, or are will make sense when substituted for it in a sentence. Action Verbs vs. Linking Verbs
