Chat Rooms ◦ Typed conversation that occurs on the computer. ◦ The conversation is in real time. ◦ Is located on the Internet server with the purpose of permitting users to chat Instant Messaging (IM) ◦ An Internet communication service that notifies you when one or more people are on line ◦ You are allowed to exchange messages or enter chat rooms with people you’ve list for IM’s ◦ Both parties must be on the computer at the same time ◦ The conversation or IM occurs in real time.

Electronic-Mail (e-mail) ◦ Transmission of messages and files via a computer network. ◦ Primary means of communication for personal and business use ◦ An e-mail address is required The e-mail address is a combination of a user name and a domain name that identifies the user File Transfer Protocol (FTP) ◦ An Internet standard that permits file uploading and downloading with other computers on the Internet ◦ Large files are often compressed to save space and time.

Newsgroups ◦ An online area where people have written discussions about a particular subject. ◦ The entire collections of Internet newsgroups are called Usenet. Message Boards ◦ Are easier to read because they do not require a newsreader. Mailing List ◦ A group of e-mail names and addresses give a single name. One message is sent to people on the list. You must subscribe to the list.

A meeting between two or more geographically separated people who use a network or the Internet to transmit audio and video. Requires video conferencing software along with a microphone, speakers, and a video camera attached to a computer As you speak, members hear your voice on their speakers. Any image in front of the camera will appear on the screen A whiteboard is another window on the screen that displays notes and drawings on all participant’s screens.

More business meeting, corporate training, and education classes will be conducted as video conferences as the cost of the hardware and software for video conferencing decreases. Users with high-speed broadband Internet connections experience a much better video performance.

Keep messages brief and use proper grammar and spelling Be polite, avoid offensive language Avoid sending or posting flames, abusive or insulting messages Avoid sending spam or junk e-mail Do not us all caps (shouting) Use emoticons to express emotions Use abbreviations and acronyms Clearly identify a spoiler, which is a message that reveals a solution or ending.
