THE WRITINGS ON THE WALL: USING POSTERS TO ASSESS FOR LEARNING MUHAMMAD ASAD SIDDIQUI 1, ADEEL AHMED KHAN 2, ZEESHAN AHMED 3 1 Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh 2 Department of Community Health Sciences, Aga Khan University, Karachi 3 Department of Community Medicine, Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi Assessment for learning What influences students most is not the teaching but the assessment Development of innovative assessment techniques can reduce the assessment load, generate quicker and better feedback and provide an integrated approach to quality assurance Key features of posters Sharing of ideas and an effective way of presenting information Promotes ownership and responsibility for learning Enhances engagement and motivation Develops personal judgement Cultivates transferable skills Creatively facilitates adult or pedagogical learning due to its flexibility Attractively describes scientific and research findings Whats being assessed? May be viewed by students as an easier assessment option Time management and self directed learning are essential Requires careful preparation of students by tutor Weighting of marking criteria needs to be explicit May favour those with creative flair and technical ability Performance anxiety may not be conducive to learning Promotes understanding of goals and criteria Help learners know how to improve Focus on how people learn Is part of effective planning Recognize all educational achievement Develops the capacity for self (and peer) assessment Is a professional skill Is central to classroom practice Student evaluations It was more satisfying than other assignments. I felt really motivated to get what Id learnt across I learnt more about the subject this way. I had to think more creatively and be ready to defend what Id written This has taught me about teamwork and developed my confidence and presentation skills It was great creating something completely original, and much more fun than writing an essay Presenting my poster was a great opportunity for getting helpful feedback and I realised how much Id learned Sharing our work made it feel more valued somehow Student evaluations It was more satisfying than other assignments.
