ART DESIGN AND STYLE TERMS
2
COMPOSITION The plan, placement, or arrangement of the elements in an art work.
3
BALANCE The way the elements of art are arranged to create a feeling of stability in a work. The equalization of elements in a work of art. Balance in design is similar to balance in physics. A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)
4
CONTRAST A large difference between two things: hot and cold, green and red, light and shadow. A way of putting elements of art next to each other to stress the differences between them. It can direct attention to points of interest.
5
COMPLEMENTARY COLORS Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel (example: red and green). High contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. Can be tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out.

COLOR WHEEL
9
SATURATION A color's purity of hue; its intensity. A brilliant color is strongly saturated. High saturation low saturation
10
HARMONY Agreement Pleasing to the eye way of combining elements of art to accent their similarities and bind picture parts into a whole. Often achieved through repetition and simplicity.
11
JUXTAPOSITION Being placed close together or side by side to provoke comparison, contrast or irony.
12
NEGATIVE SPACE Empty space in an artwork, a void. Sometimes a bad thing, though other times used creatively to express something or draw emphasis.
13
SILHOUETTE An outline filled with a solid color, typically black on a white ground.
14
TEXTURE An element of art, texture is the surface quality or "feel" of an object, its smoothness, roughness, softness, etc.
15
VIGNETTE an unbordered picture, often a portrait the edges of which fade off or blur into the color of its surrounding area.

In graphic design CLEAN / FLAT Refinement—elements look like they belong & benefit / complement design as a whole. Spacing - images aren’t cluttered in any way Alignment – using a “grid” system. Smooth and unbroken lines are visually pleasing. Typography-- limited/appropriate use of fonts Color— light, neutral and limited color palette Minimalistic design. Crisp edges, bright colors and 2D / flat illustrations. Decorative elements are unnecessary clutter. If aspect serves no functional purpose, it's a distraction Bright, contrasting colors make illustrations pop from backgrounds / grab attention. Images like icons can easily be understood.

DSLR D igital S ingle L ens R eflex Interchangeable lenses & allows for more control of settings and final image.
24
IRIS (F-STOPS) Adjustable opening used to control amount of light coming through the lens Measured in F-STOPS – Large F-STOP = small hole (aperture) – Small F-STOP = big hole (aperture) EXPOSURE
25
APERTURE The actual hole that is created by the iris
26
EXPOSURE ISO Camera’s sensitivity to light Higher ISO = higher exposure Higher ISO = grainy picture
27
SHUTTER Opens and closes multiple times a second Shutter speed = How fast camera’s shutter opens and closes in a second INCREASING shutter speed DECREASES exposure EXPOSURE
28
PARTS & FUNCTIONS of CAMERAS DEPTH of FIELD The amount of the image other than the subject that is in focus.
29
PARTS & FUNCTIONS of CAMERAS DEPTH of FIELD SHALLOW DEEP FOCUS
30
PARTS & FUNCTIONS of CAMERAS DEPTH of FIELD SHALLOW LOWER F-Stop = shallow depth of field
31
TRY THIS… Go with your group Experiment with shutter speed, iris (f- stops), and ISO. Each person take 3 pictures of the same thing: –1 good –1 overexposed –1 underexposed Experiment again!
