ARNO RIVER The hydrographic basin of the Arno river covers a total surface of 9.040 sq Km. The basin affects the territory of 10 provinces and 166 communes. The river is 241 Km long Tuscany

The source of the Arno river is on Mount Falterona, in the Tuscan Appennines at elevation 1.385 m above sea level. Here the water is clean, pure, with no trace of pollution The source

San Giovanni Valdarno From here the Arno begins to be affected by zootechnical pollution from the Valdichiana area

Florence In Florence, which is the main city in Tuscany, the river is polluted by the wastewater coming from textile industries, up to the area of Fucecchio.

Empoli In this town the river is polluted by the discharges of many industries (agricultural chemical and ceramic)

Fucecchio In this picture we can remark the high pollution shown also by the colour of the water

Santa Croce sull’Arno In this area the Arno river is contaminated by the wastewater of numerous tanneries. In fact this is known as the Tannery District

Pontedera Our river meets here another type of pollution, the civil pollution, which combines with the industrial one.

Pisa In our town the river is very polluted. Analysis and data collected in September have shown that the river has a very high pollution rate

Mouth of the Arno river A strong microbiological pollution has been found here because of inadequate wastewater treatment plants
