Realities of information discovery 93% — Agree Google provides worthwhile information From OCLC’s Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources report: 85% — agree Yahoo provides worthwhile information 78% — agree library Web sites provide worthwhile information 69% — feel libraries and search engines provide the same level of trustworthiness
3
33 % 186 % 27 % 33 % 10 % What we have learned Change in use of Web services from 2005 - 2007
4
Reasons for never using the online library Web site Most college students know about the library Web site, but respond that other sites have better information as their reason for not using it.
5
How can we summarize the cause and effect of this rapidly changing information market place and its relation to libraries?
6
Used to be: the user built their Workflow around the library Now: the library must build its service around the user workflow
7
Used to be: resources were scarce and attention was abundant Now: attention is scarce and resources are abundant
8
Who is engaging users? Search Engines Amazon MySpace Facebook SecondLife YouTube Flickr Twitter
9
Expectations in a networked world Simplicity and ease of use Self-service Immediate gratification Single source for one category Rich interactivity User participation, contribution, collaboration
10
Moving to NextGen discovery to delivery services Our desired outcome is to engage end users How? Find out who is engaging them successfully Learn and adopt from those successes Be willing to adapt existing mental models
11
What can we learn These sites are user centric We tend to be library centric Why this is important 15 years ago attention was abundant and resources where scarce Now resources are abundant and attention is scarce
12
Survey Says... Students / Public 1.More links to online content (1 st ) 2.More tables of contents (3 rd ) 3.More summaries (4 th ) 4.Add excerpts to records (7 th ) 5.Merge/remove duplicate records (8 th ) 6.More records for non-English (10 th ) 7.More cover art (11 th ) 8.Add more formats (18 th ) Librarians 1.Merge/remove duplicate records (1 st ) 2.More tables of contents (2 nd ) 3.More summaries (3 rd ) 4.More cover art (7 th ) 5.Add more formats (13 th ) 6.More records for non-English (14 th ) 7.More links to online content (15 th ) 8.Add excerpts to records (17 th )
13
High level conclusions 1.Librarians use bibliographic data to find what they want and demand accuracy of that data 2.Users use evaluative data such as summaries, excerpts and the actual full text to find what is useful
14
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” —Charles Darwin

OCLC’s Vision Deliver library resources and services at point of need for as many libraries as possible Promotes world’s largest library cooperative In a manner that users want and understand Encourage users to participate in network and community of libraries Local, group and global reach Position OCLC as a web-scale service provider setting the stage for the ability to: Improve efficiencies in library workflows Reduce overall cost of ownership
16
Steps toward that vision WorldCat (the database) Open WorldCat – Seed major search engines with bibliographic data from WorldCat. Why? To make library materials findable on the open Web and drive traffic to libraries. WorldCat.org – Make the entire WorldCat catalog available to users as an openly available service on the Web. Why? To provide one place for users to find and get materials from their closest libraries, and all libraries. Expose FirstSearch Databases through worldcat.org - Expose databases and other subscribed data from OCLC via worldcat.org. Why? To provide an enhanced discovery experience libraries can provide to their patrons in order to discover OCLC resources.
17
The collective collection of content 1.8 billion items and growing! 139 million bib records 3.6 million digital items 1.45 billion holdings 320 million electronic database records 27 million items (Google, HathiTrust, OAIster) Physical holdings in WorldCat Licensed digital content in library collections Local library content being digitized
18
Further steps toward that vision WorldCat Local “quick start” – introduce OCLC as a provider of front end library applications to as many libraries as possible. Why? To set the stage for additional add-on functionality and provide smaller libraries with an affordable “next-generation” discovery to delivery experience. WorldCat Local – Customized for individual libraries and systems, closing the gap between discovery and delivery. Why? To emphasize library holdings and incorporate the delivery systems of the institution. Web-scale management services – provide network level acquisition and circulation functionality. Why? Leverage the power of the cooperative and provide a Web-scale solution with enough functionality and newly integrated workflows to allow libraries to work at the network level.

What do users search? WorldCat.org WorldCat (the database) Article-level metadata from over 66 million articles indexed from: NLM MEDLINE U.S. Department of Education's ERIC database British Library Inside serials GPO Monthly Catalogue Elsevier file which represents 2006 forward for SCOPUS and Science Direct OCLC ArticleFirst® database
20
What is required for holdings to display? WorldCat.org Holdings in WorldCat (the database) Subscription to WorldCat on FirstSearch Worldcat.org
21
WorldCat.org numbers – Good news for libraries WorldCat.org usage and content Over 2 million unique users per month 14 million page views per month 6 million full record views per month 540 million+ total visits to WorldCat.org 29 million+ total click-throughs to library sites (OPAC, ILL, OpenURL, etc.)
