3 Intro This PowerPoint is going to explore the unknown facts about the 1900’s We will see everything from the creation of the first hand held camera to the founding of one of the US party places.

4 1900 Kodak Brownie Camera

5 1900 In the February of 1900 Kodak introduced the “Brownie” Camera, it was the first hand held camera ever!!! It was designed and manufactured by Frank A. Brownell. It was a simple, black, rectangular box covered in imitation leather with nickel fittings. This camera was sold for a dollar and film for it cost15 cents a roll. It was designed and marketed for children and was named after characters created by Palmer Cox, children's author and illustrator.

8 1901 Queen Victoria’s Death

9 1901 Queen Victoria died on January 22, 1901 at the age of 81 due to cerebral hemorrhage She became ruler at the age of 18 an had the longest rein in British hisotry,63 years, it lasted from 1837-1901 Queen Victoria had 6 children, 40 grandchildren, and 37 great grandchildren. Queen Victoria’s son, Albert Edward, took the throne after his mothers death. Queen Victoria’s influence on western society is still felt today.

11 1901 Queen Victoria wore black for 40 years to morn her husbands death.   Her words are inscribed above her mausoleum Queen Victoria, her husband, and there Children.  “farewell best beloved here at last I shall rest with thee, with thee in Christ I shall rise again”

12 1902 Le Voyage Dans La Lune

13 1902 The movie “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” was the fist science fiction film ever made. It was a French black and white silent film and the title in English translated to “A Trip To The Moon” The film was based off of Jules Verne’s novel called “From Earth to the Moon” “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” was 14 minutes long and was written and directed by George Melees.

16 1903 Crayola Crayons

17 1903 The first box of crayola crayons were sold in 1903. They were invented by cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith. The word Crayola was created by Alice Stead Binney Edwin Binney’s wife she took the French words for chalk (craie) and oily (oleaginous) The first boxes consisted of 8 colors black, brown, blue, red, purple, yellow, orange, and green and were sold for a nickel

20 1904 Russo-Japanese War

21 1904 The Russo-Japanese war began out of the rivalry between Russia and Japan for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. The war began on February 8 th, 1904 when the main Japanese fleet launched and attack led by General Maresuke Nogi. Japan lost 85,000 people during this war and Russia lost 125,000 people.

24 1905 Las Vegas Founded

25 1905 Las Vegas, Nevada was founded on May 15 th, 1905. It was founded when Montana senator William Andrew Clark auctioned off 1,200 lots. A 1910 law made it illegal to gamble in Las Vegas. In 1931 a legalized gambling bill was approved making Nevada the first state to legalize gambling.

29 1906 The 1906 Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece These games were also known as the 1906 Intercalated Games. The Games had 13 sports and 78 events It was in these games that the United States had its first official team and team uniforms. France won the 1906 Olympic Games.

32 1907 Hershey Park Opens

33 1907 On April 24,1907 Hershey Park opened its doors for the first time. The Park was originally for the chocolate factory workers to go to on breaks On July 4, 1908 a merry-go-round was installed this was the first ride every in the Park The park is still opened today but as a amusement park for the public and it is located in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

35 1907 Hershey Park slogan is “The Sweetest Place On Earth”   I grew up about 30 minutes away form Hershey Pennsylvania and have been to Hershey Park several times and it truly is the sweetest place on earth

36 1907 cont. This is Hershey Park’s Kissing Tower it is 300 feet tall and it is said to be good luck if you kiss someone at the top   All throughout the park you will see Hershey Chocolates walking around

38 1908 The Times Square New Years Eve Ball drop for the first time on January 1, 1908 The first New Years Ball was made of iron and wood it was 5 feet in diameter and weighted 700 pounds The ball had 100 25watt lights and was made by Jacob Starr The New Years Eve Ball now is 12 feet in diameter weighs 11,875 pounds and is covered with 2,688 water fold crystals.

41 1909 Lincoln Penny

42 1909 On August 2, 1909 the U.S. issued the first every Lincoln penny. This coin was designed by Victor David Brenner. There were 6 types of Lincoln pennies created in 1909 before the design was chosen. The U.S made 25 million pennies before the release on August 2, 1909

44 1909 The Lincoln penny has endured the same head side since the release in 1909   Lady Liberty was on the penny before Abraham Lincoln
