Warm up 4-21-15 Essential Question: What role do belief systems play in society? Draw a diagram of the Chinese village on page 46 in the notebook from page 233 in the Blue text. Make as many connections as you can to Feudal estates, Greek city states and Roman cities. We will look at Daoism today another Chinese philosophy.

Taoism / Daoism It is the same Is another Chinese philosophy based on a peaceful society Laozi (Lao Tzu) lived in China from 606 BC to 530 BC He is believed to be the 1 st Daoist philosopher

Taught the goal of life was to achieve oneness with the Dao – –a force of the universe – –connected to nature that cannot be defined only experienced and felt

Daoism Daoism teaches that humans should see themselves as part of nature and should understand that change is part of everything (nature and seasonal change) The best way for humans to find peace is by living simply, in harmony with nature

Daoism Daoists do not believe in strong government; – –happiness can be achieved by contemplating nature – –having a balanced life in tune with nature – –not by following societal rules and laws.

Daoism Harmony comes from balancing opposite forces of nature, called yin and yang – –Yin is negative, cold, dark, heavy and feminine – –Yang is positive, light, bright, warm and masculine
