What is the Let’s Move campaign? Michelle Obama’s initiative to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation. Let’s Move Faith and Communities, an effort within the Let’s Move initiative, emphasizes the critical role of faith-based and community leaders in childhood obesity. HEAL-SLO members participated in a conference call with the First Lady who hosted over 4,500 people, including faith-based and community leaders representing more than 50 organizations committing to Let’s Move Faith and Communities.

Why participate in Let’s Move SLO? Many resources and support available for local efforts. Highlights accomplishments in communities across the country. Community leaders are well positioned to: Initiate and coordinate activities encouraging health. Empower communities to make better choices.

1. Help Parents Make Healthy Choices a. Make meals healthier by: Serving healthy drinks (replace sugar-sweetened beverages with 100% juice, milk or water) Serving healthy snacks (low in fat, sodium, and added sugars) Encouraging home cooked dinners (more fruits/veggies, limit processed foods, portion control, follow nutrition guidelines) 3. Help Children get Physical Activity a. Encourage physical activity by: Taking the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (or PALA) Challenge (online tracking) Group activities (e.g. walking groups at work, schools, etc. and reporting activity)

HEAL-SLO’s role is to… ORGANIZE – Facilitate through: Helping parents make healthy choices Helping children get physically active REACH OUT – Notify community about campaign and how to join, through: Media events Marketing Awards/Incentives Facebook Page Data collection RECEIVE PLEDGES – online through healslo.com INTERNALIZE – Challenge ourselves and our own “kingdoms”
