Today’s Adventure Includes:  Objectives  Topics  Instructional Design  Logistics  Successes  Next Steps  Q & A

Objectives for Adult Learners Staff will …. -experience habits of mind of an online learner -complete close reading of an article - respond to content included in PODs and reflect on the experience of online learning

Objectives for POD Designers Developers will …. -introduce and immerse staff in universal education topics within time frame -build modules based on principles of adult learning theory -use our current resources effectively -develop cadre of in-house users interested in similar topics

P.O.D. Topics Grit and Resilience Flipped Classroom Close Reading (CCLS)

IT’S ALL THE RAGE THESE DAYS… You have probably heard colleagues talk about the concept or you may have read articles about the instructional method of “flipping your classroom.” Educators have espoused advantages ranging from increased student motivation and personal responsibility on the part of their students to additional class time for projects they haven’t attempted in years. Will it work for my subject area? Is it effective every time? How difficult is implementation? This POD provides an overview of the purpose, process, and potential outcomes of the Flipped Classroom. P.O.D. Flipped Out!

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH…YOU KNOW YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRAIL… We have established a culture that values success without struggle. How many of us really achieve this in any area of our lives? Choose the images you prefer: It’s like pushing through the physical pain of exercise to achieve the benefit from stressing your body systems or climbing a mountain for the benefit of the view at the top. How do we establish a new culture that says, “struggle is ok; perhaps it’s desirable?” Without struggle, how do we truly grow academically or otherwise? What are the words / strategies that allow students to get stuck – how can we coach them through to success? P.O.D. True Grit!

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL…WITH THE TEXTS THAT MATTER… We hear regularly now about the topic of “close reading” but many still have questions about what this technique does to enhance student learning and how it is implemented in classrooms across all disciplines. If you have wondered about ways to effectively help students make connections to prior learning, interact in meaningful ways with authentic texts, and how to implement this Common Core strategy, take a closer look at this POD. 20 STAFF RESPONSES When the students take time to re-read the passage and attempt to highlight or circle facts they are increasing their awareness of the content.

STAFF RESPONSES I enjoy taking online courses because it eliminates the time tables that are normally put upon you in regular classroom environments.

STAFF RESPONSES The ability to choose different articles and videos made this easy.

STAFF RESPONSES Today's on-line learning experience allowed us to have a choice in topics and work at our own pace.

STAFF RESPONSES Sometimes we are the problem because we most likely have the answer and are too willing to just give it to save time.

STAFF RESPONSES […i]t was useful to have some control over the content that I explored. Having different articles and videos to view allowed me to focus my own learning to maximize the efficiency of my time. I was also able to use the Internet in order to pursue certain topics and other articles that came up during my close reading.
