Specials Schedule Monday: P.E. and Library Tuesday: P.E. Wednesday: Music Thursday: P.E. and Music Friday: Art Please return all Library books on Fridays. Please make sure your student wears comfortable shoes and clothes on P.E. days.

Language Arts Morning Meeting Shared Reading Guided Reading Word Study Writer’s Workshop

Morning Meeting & Shared Reading We meet together on the carpet. We sing songs and read poems and big books to begin our day together. We enjoy a read aloud.

Guided Reading We meet together in small groups throughout the morning. The students each receive explicit reading instruction on their individual readiness level daily.

Word Study Groups are based on individual Developmental Assessment Score Will work on 1 sort per week

Writing We will have writer’s workshop 3 to 4 times each week. Workshop Model: –Mini-lesson –Independent work time –Author Share Time

Math Investigations Curriculum Units to Be Taught: –Who is in School Today? –Counting and Comparing –What Comes Next? –Measuring and Counting –Make a Shape, Build a Block –How Many Do You Have? –Sorting and Surveys

Science Units to Be Taught: –Scientific Investigation –Senses –Physical Properties –Water –Need of Living Things –Shadows –Sun –Patterns –Changes Over Time –Resources

Social Studies Units to Be Taught: –Civics –Past and Present –Geography –Economics The organizing theme for Kindergarten is Cooperation. Students will learn basic concepts related to history, patriotism, national symbols, good citizenship, geographic location, economics and the importance of following rules, and respecting the rights and property of other people.

Homework Reading: Students will read nightly to or with someone. Also please work with your students on the suggested activities from the StoryTown, Math Investigations, and Social Studies Family letters.

Poetry The poetry booklet will contain copies of songs and poems we sing/read together during the day.

Technology Available Technology: –3 computers for student use in our classroom –Computer lab for student use –CD players (Listening Center)

Lunch 11:20- 11:40 Please feel free to join your child for lunch. Please use the APS website to put money in your child’s lunch account.

Scholastic Book Orders. We will send out Scholastic book orders throughout the year. We can only accept money orders or checks written out to Scholastic Book Club. Please make just One check if you order from both Firefly & See saw.

Birthdays You are welcome to bring a treat for the class to celebrate your child’s birthday. Please make it simple. We prefer cupcakes or cookies. No cakes or goodie bags, please.
