Dear Freddy: My name is Li Hua. I’m beginning a band with my friends. However, we have never been in a band before. Can you please give us some advice? I would like to know how we should choose the music we want to play. Sample letter

I like pop music but most of my friends like rock and roll. Only Liu Mei likes rap. How are we to decide what to play? Do you suggest we play a little of all of these types of music? Or should we only play one kind of music? How did you and your friends decide what to play together?

I would also like to know how to choose a name for our band. I like the name The Chopsticks because that means working together. Wang Jun wants us to be called The Legs because there are four of us like the legs of a chair. What do you think? Yours sincerely, Li Hua

Sample writing I like erhu music because it is so moving and it reminds me of wonderful snowy mountains, forests, and lakes where no one lives but the birds to enjoy their beauty. Writing task P74

The most loved music is Er Quan Yin Yue, which sounds very sad and is played by a famous musician who could not see. The erhu is a very old instrument in China. An early form if the erhu could be found in the Tang Dynasty. It is made of wood and has two metal strings.
12
The bow is placed between the two strings and the musician can play it standing up or sitting down. Xu Ke is my favourite erhu player and he is famous throughout the world. I have even heard him play Western classical music for a violin on his erhu. It sounded very beautiful.
