ACTS : INTRO PARAGRAPH A : Attention Getter = quote, fact, or any other way to grab the reader’s attention – it must be related to the topic, but not specific to the thesis. Sophomore English will not be asking questions or giving definitions as the Attention Getter. C : Connector Statement = Expand on the attention getter – explain quote, explain fact, give background, and star connecting the information from the attention getter with the information in the thesis. T : Thesis = the main purpose of your essay – present your thoughts on the subject. Must contain a subject + a position. A thesis statement should never contain the following: in my opinion, I think, I believe… The entire thesis represent one main idea and is a declarative sentence with no qualifiers (might, maybe, perhaps, etc) S : Summary = These are the main ideas of your body paragraphs. It is a preview of what is to come in your essay. It should include your thesis + a list of your main ideas. Sophomore English will not be listing the three body paragraphs in the summary.

TEACHER SAMPLE INTRODUCTION A: Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” C: People are constantly judging and criticizing others whom behave differently; nowadays, being different is more accepted, but, during the Puritan times, being different would result in severe consequences. T: Not all members of Puritan communities would conform entirely to the Puritan way, but all were terrified of the consequences that awaited them if an individual identity was discovered. S: Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” depicted the hysteria that would follow being different in a Puritan village.

M-EL-CON M : Main Idea = It should be a thesis/topic sentence for this particular paragraph. The focus of this paragraph should reflect the thesis, expand on the thesis. E : Evidence = Provide one example (from The Crucible) that supports the main idea of this paragraph L : Link = Further explain and elaborate on your evidence. Explain HOW the specific quote proves the main idea. Con : Conclusion = Transition + Concluding sentence – restate the main idea in a different way and include a summary of the evidence. Try to think of a clean transition into the next topic sentence.

TEACHER SAMPLE MEL-CON M:Being a member of a Puritan community often meant living in complete fear of making a mistake; the fear of being an individual prevented Puritans from pursuing their individual identities. E:In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, John Proctor makes a critical mistake of having an affair with Abigail Williams. Not only does this hurt his wife, but, if the Puritan town of Salem hears that he disobeyed on of the Ten Commandments, then he will face one of many severe punishments. The havoc that Abigail is wreaking upon the town can be easily stopped if only Proctor would admit to his affair. While arguing with his wife, John Proctor states, “You will not judge me more, Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail, and I will think on it” (Miller, 52). L:Proctor’s fear of punishment is what keeps him from admitting to his wrongdoing; many people are suffering at his expense, including his wife, and he is too terrified to publicize his non-conforming act to his Puritan neighbors. His fear is completely justified because Puritans who do not conform are not Puritans, and, therefore, are condemned to Hell. John Proctor knows that if his affair were to be made public, then he would be humiliated and reminded about how he is predestined to Hell; this is enough to terrify anyone into hiding any non-conforming behavior. Con:While John Proctor is too terrified of the consequences to step forward, Abigail and the girls attempt to fake conformity to avoid consequence.

STAC S : Summary = Transition + Restate your THESIS and main idea without repeating yourself. Sophomore English will not use “In conclusion” in ANY essay. T : Thesis = Restate the main purpose of your essay from the essay prompt. A : Attention Getter = Tie this sentence back to your original attention getter, but add some new detail because your readers have been enlightened by all of your facts and writing! C : Clincher Sentence = a final statement that provides the reader with a memorable thought on the topic.
7
TEACHER SAMPLE STAC S:Even though Puritan communities had rare members like Giles Corey, everyone was still completely terrified by the consequences that came with not conforming. T:The Crucible contained perfect examples of how people feared the wrath of being “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” A:So, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment;” especially in a Puritan community. C:Even today, in modern America, people are still pressured into conforming to societal norms; one should follow in the steps of Giles Corey and by the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson; one should stand up for an identity; one should be different.
