How to Unwrap a Poem

Quick Write What comes to mind when I say poetry? Why do some people think poetry is hard?

Poetry is like… A box of chocolates. You never know what youre getting until you take a bite.

Read the poem for enjoyment. Jot down your first reactions to the poem. –Mark anything that confuses you. ? –Mark anything that seems important. * –Make connections. C –Circle unfamiliar vocabulary.

Read the poem again, this time for understanding. Paraphrase lines/verses. What is the poem about? Who is speaking in the poem? Who is being spoken to in the poem?

Read the poem again, this time for interpretation. How does the poem convey its message? How does the poem look on the page? How does the poem sound? Look for alliterations, consonance, and assonance. How does the poem move? Look for rhythm, rhyme and punctuation. Look for imagery and figurative language. Look for similes, metaphors, personification, and symbols. What words create the mood of the poem?

Read the poem another time, this time for critical stance. Why do you think the poet wrote this? What is your personal opinion of this poem?
