12 Finally - a thought on Professorial appointment criteria ‘each part (of the knowledge triangle) is equally important ….’ We must ask ourselves an important question …. Does a talented, aspirational academic have an equal chance of achieving what many regard as the ultimate academic recognition, through specialisation on two sides of the triangle? Do we say what we mean, and mean what we say – are we walking the talk?

13 It is with great pleasure that I am now able to invite applications for the conferment of professorial titles within our University. In recent months a great deal of work has been done both to produce a document to accompany this latest call for applications and to consult fully with appropriate parties within the University. The document setting out the conferment process reflects the high esteem within which the University holds our professoriate. The conferment process is closely aligned to the University’s mission and purpose. The University welcomes applications from academics from every discipline, background and specialism. The conferment process recognises that candidates for a professorial title will differ in their academic and professional profiles. This is in keeping with the diverse character of the University. Professor Christine King – VC Staffordshire University, 1995-2010

14 The criteria adopted by the University are intended to demand a level of achievement no less than that traditionally expected within British universities: although the nature of the achievement need not be confined to those activities traditionally recognised by a professorial title and will reflect the vision and mission of Staffordshire University. The University would wish to give as much weight to the skills and achievement of teachers, entrepreneurs and practitioners as to those of more traditional scholars and researchers. A candidate must be outstanding in at least one of the following criteria and have significant achievement in at least one other. Only exceptionally would a candidate with a narrower record be considered and then only because of quite exceptional achievement judged by one criterion.

15 ‘If we do what we always do, we will get what we always got’ and in my view, that’s not going to work!
