Packaged food industry in India The Indian food and grocery market is the world’s sixth largest & is projected to grow at the rate of 104%, touching US$ 482 billion by 2020. Packaged food industry contributes to 32% of the country’s total food market Approx. 60% of sugar in India is consumed by bulk food manufacturing sector including Bakery, local sweet shops & FMCG Indian consumers on average purchased just 151 calories each day through packaged food and soft drinks in 2014, less than a fifth of the global average of 765 calories. What is FSSAI? FSSAI-Food Safety & Standards Authority of India, 2011 is enacted to: - Consolidate laws relating to food in India - Lay down science based standards for articles of food - Regulate production, storage, trade, distribution, sale and import of food - Facilitate food safety.
