Helpful Hints for Students: Main idea = CLAIM – Often answers the question “What?” (e.g. What is the text section about?) Identify the REASON – Often answers the question “Why?” (e.g., Why did this happen? Why is it important?) Identify EVIDENCE – Proof to support the statement – Often answers the question, “How?” (e.g., How do you know? How does it work?)
