Unit 4: Shapes and Space Ms Cormier April 23 rd, 2010
2
Vocabulary/ Definitions Polygon: a closed shape made up of line segments Ex. Triangles, rectangles Polyhedron: an object that the faces are polygons Net: a pattern that can be folded to make an object. Regular prism: has regular polygons as bases that are parallel to each other, the other faces are rectangular. Regular pyramid: has a regular polygon as a base, and triangles for the faces. Regular dodecagon: is a polygon with 12 equal sides and equal angles.
3
Outcomes/ Goals for this unit: 4.1- 4.2 Trace or draw a net for a polyhedron. 4.3, 4.4, 4.7 Find the total surface area of a polyhedron. 4.5, 4.6, 4.8 Develop and apply formulas to find the volume.
4
Basic shapes Basic shapes are used to form polyhedrons. Circle Rectangle Triangle Square
5
Names of other polygons Pentagon 5 sides Hexagon 6 sides Heptagon 7 sides Octagon Decagon 10 sides Dodecagon 12 sides
6
Rectangular prism 4 faces are rectangles 2 bases are squares or smaller rectangles
7
Pyramids and their bases -Pyramids are named by the bases they have. Ex: A rectangular pyramid has a rectangle for a base. 1.What would be the name of the bases of these other pyramids? 2.How many sides does each of these bases have?
