In Motion! Significant Figures
2
When adding or subtracting you are limited by decimal place. When multiplying or dividing you are limited by significant digits. OPERATIONS USING SIGNIFICANT DIGITS
3
Significant Digits – Addition/Subtraction Add 35.786 m + 4.567 m + 6.54 m 35.786 4.567 + 6.54 46.893 m 46.89 m
4
Significant Digits Multiplication/Division Multiply 5.78 cm by 8.3 cm = 47.974 cm 2 48 cm 2 (2 sig. figs) Significant Digits -> Division Divide 78.3 m by 2.435 s = 32.156057 m/s 32.2 m/s (3 sig. figs)

Units not finished adding notes for converting yet! In physics we deal with many types of measurements. We measure mass in Kilograms, and we measure distance in meters. Each quantity has its own unit of measure.

7
Prefixes We modify our base units with prefixes to adjust our measurements. For example, the distance from Winnipeg to Brandon is approximately 200 000 m. However, we don’t use meters to describe the distance, we use Kilometers. Each Kilometer is 1000 m. It is approximately 200 km from Winnipeg to Brandon. The prefix Kilo, is how we indicate the measure given is 1000 sets of the unit.
