Quick Review Answer these questions on your dry erase board 1) What are two reasons that environments change? 2) When environmental change occurs, what happens to the organisms that live in the environment? 3) What is extinction? 4) Is extinction rare or common? Science SPI 0807.5.2 Adaptation

Two types of adaptations: (1)Behavioral- (2)Structural- Question: See the insects in the picture below? Is this mainly behavioral or structural adaptation? Can you see them? (what an organism does) (what an organism is…shape & form of the body) This is mainly structural adaptation because these insects have adapted by developing bodies that look like thorns. This is called camouflage SPI 0807.5.2 Adaptation Notes Science Press the Right Arrow Button to Advance through the Presentation!

Two types of adaptations: (1)Behavioral- (2)Structural- Look at the image of the hibernating bear Question: Is this a behavioral or structural adaptation? (what an organism does) (what an organism is…shape & form of the body) This is behavioral because it is what the animal does. SPI 0807.5.2 Adaptation Notes Science

Two Key Behavioral Adaptations: (1)Sexual Reproduction- (2)Asexual Reproduction- (requires 2 parents: male & female) (requires only 1 parent) SPI 0807.5.2 Adaptation Notes Science Reproduces sexually Dogs Hydra Reproduces asexually

1) The process that drives structural and behavioral change… 2) Changes and variation result from… 3) Changes and variation are enabled by… Key Adaptation Points …sexual reproduction (over many generations) and changes in the environment …genetic mutations (over many generations) and changes in the environment … is called natural selection When significant environmental changes occur, organisms must also change (adapt) by either changing their behavior or changing their body structure or both.
