5 Objectives and Rationale for MDMS Objectives – Improving the nutritional status of children in classes I – VIII – Encouraging children, belonging to disadvantaged sections, to attend school more regularly and help them concentrate on classroom activities. – Providing nutritional support to children of elementary stage in drought-affected areas during summer vacation.

7  MDM covered 10.44 Crore children of primary and upper primary classes in 12.12 Lakh Govt., Govt. aided, local body, and NCLP Schools as well as Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) / Alternative Innovative Education (AIE) centers including Madarsas / Maqtabs supported under SSA covered up to 2 nd quarter of 2012-13.  Rs 48000 crores allocated for the programme during the 11 th five year plan; Rs 38,000 crores spent during the plan.  Funds of Rs. 7619 crore (64%) released against the outlay of Rs 11,937 crore during the current financial year Coverage Coverage

15 Pratichi Trust - Prof Amartya Sen MDM has been quite effective if seen as a ‘food security net’ for nutritionally deprived children; it is one of the most potent school based interventions; raised the enrollment and attendance of children; an effective tool in bringing social harmony; women empowerment and addressing livelihood issues.

16 Supreme Court Commissioners for MDMS – The survey confirmed the belief that the mid day meal scheme is one of the better run schemes in most parts of the country and is also very popular among parents and children.
