Biomass burning session Guergana Guerova The 3rd GEOS–Chem Users' Meeting April 11–13, 2007 @ Harvard University Simulations of the 2002-2003 bush fire season in Australia

Bush fire season November 2002 - January 2003 Guerova 2 Motivation: worst drought in a century in Australia 2003 a record year for wildfires January 260 000 hectares burnt 20 500 people displaced millions $ in public and private properties Distinctive properties of Australian aerosols: spinifex smoke: high in black carbon dust: high in hematite australian dust and smoke more absorbing increased atmospheric heating

Dust storm Griffith NSW Australia: 12 November 2002 Guerova 3 Photo: Denis CouchFront brings dust from the west

GEOS-Chem AOD 550 nm 2001/2002 2002/2003 2003/2004 Guerova 5 November December January.

FTIR correlation AOD/CO, AOD/NH3 Guerova 7 AOD / CO AOD / NH3 C. Murphy, University of Wollongong AOD NH3 Regression equation: CO=[(1.6±0.1)AOD + (2.1±0.1)] x10 18 AOD CO

GEOS-Chem correlation AOD/CO, AOD/NH3 Guerova 8 AOD / CO AOD / NH3 AOD NH3 AOD CO

GEOS-Chem 26 January 2003 Guerova 8 GEOS-Chem AOD GEOS-Chem CO

Conclusions Guerova 11 AOD/ CO and AOD/ NH3 correlate in bush fires in January 2003 FTIR correlation ~ 0.95 for both AOD/CO and AOD/NH3 GEOS-Chem AOD/CO correlation ~0.95 in January 2003 only MODIS AOD can be translated into trace gas column vertical concentration known infer surface concentration Working plan 2007-2008 inverse modeling using MODIS AOD use MODIS AOD to convert to trace gas columns long range transport over the Tasman Sea real-time GEOS-Chem during the sugarcane campaign 11/2007

International ARCNESS Winter School “Atmospheric composition observation and modeling” University of Wollongong Wollongong, Australia 13 - 17 August 2007 We have pleasure in inviting you to the International ARCNESS Winter School: Atmospheric composition observation and modeling, to be held at the University of Wollongong, Wollongong Australia, in the week of 13 – 17 August 2007. Scope of the winter school The topics covered include: * Overview of atmospheric composition modeling * Observations from ground and space * Applications: bush fires, heat waves, dust storm The Winter School invites young researcher with interests in the field of tropospheric composition. The courses cover a broad spectrum of observation methods and state of art modeling of tropospheric chemistry and transport on global and regional scales. Each topic includes keynote plenary lectures with discussion. All Winter School participants are asked to present a poster of their research. There will be ample opportunity for discussion. An excursion may be organized depending on interest. A detailed program is available from: http://www.uow.edu.au/conferences/ARCNESS 2007/home.html Costs The fee is AU$ 300 (full registration) and AU$ 200 (student registration) and includes conference registration, lunch, dinner and poster session nibbles. A small number of scholarships will be available.
