1 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership National Conference Glasgow City Council has been working with the City of Marseille through a Comenius Regio Partnership to devise policy and practice for the support of newly arrived young people to both cities during their transition from primary school to secondary school.

3 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Role of Principal Teacher of Pastoral Care Know pupils through: Regular Interviews Identifying the needs of the young people Giving guidance to aid personal development Supporting pupils at key transition points throughout their education

4 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Principal Teacher of Pastoral Care in P7 (1) Meet with P7 head teachers and classroom teachers to discuss each pupils: Friendship groups Formulate transition and support plans for pupils Builds relationships with P7 teachers and gives synergy to transition process Deliver lessons that support the transitions to secondary (Passport To Shawlands) Gives direct contact with PTPC Academic progress and EAL needs Other Support Needs

5 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Principal Teacher of Pastoral Care in P7 (2) Establish family groups through 1 to 1 parental meetings Meeting parents at P7 parents night in primary school Pupils transported to school to take part in fun educational activities (sport, art music etc.) Assist in After School Taster Visits :-

6 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership When pupils Start S1 PTPC delivers PSE program – lessons based on friendship etc PTPC interviews pupils to check if settled (within 8 weeks)

7 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Staged intervention Levels and Support Plans All EAL pupils recorded as Staged Intervention as level 2 (minimum) Recorded on PRF in Seemis Support plan to reflect EAL requirements Short Term Long Term

9 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Communicating with Parents of EAL Pupils Establishing mother tongue of parents Arranging suitable Translators Use of Slovakian community workers and home link teachers e.g. PE kit requirements and rules. Consideration should to be given to: Letters sent home – Can they be read by parents? Web pages – Is there a contact page in mother tongue of pupils Handbooks translated into mother tongue Text messaging in mother tongue NB Be aware of on-line translation services

10 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Slovakian Community Workers Help with understanding the culture differences Two members of staff from Slovakia Support education in meetings with families Mainly translation when parents appear without appointments Support Education Liaison officer with home visits They have become established & trusted supports within the community

11 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership More Role Models Buddies project has shown Younger pupils relate to older pupils from community Aspirations are raised – improves learning Trust is established

12 Education for Diversity: Supporting Newly Arrived Young People in Glasgow and Marseille A Comenius Regio Partnership Getting pupils involved in Secondary After School Activities It became apparent that minority groups don’t get involved in after-school clubs etc Distance pupils have travel to and from school Not accepted within culture Link better with primary school to establish who in involved clubs in P7
