Muscle Movement Pick three sporting moves/examples and explain what muscles you would need in order to perform that move. Example: a sit up in fitness uses the abdominal muscles.

Muscle Movement Muscles can only pull when they contract, therefore they work in pairs to create a range of movement around a joint. This is called antagonistic muscle action. The working muscle is called the prime mover or agonist The relaxing muscle is called the agonist What muscles do you think work as a pair?

Antagonistic Movement

Muscles You could not live without muscles. They are involved in every movement of your body. All muscles work by shortening or contracting. There are three different types of muscles.

Types of Muscles Voluntary Muscle (skeletal): These are attached to bones They work when you want them to The brain sends a signal to the muscle to contract which then pulls on the bone This creates the movement Name an action that these muscle can create

Types of Muscles Involuntary Muscle: These are found in the walls of your internal organs: stomach, gut, bladder and blood vessels. Work on their own These are also called smooth muscles Name an action that these muscles create

Types of Muscles Cardiac muscle: This is a special involuntary muscle that forms the walls of your heart. It works non-stop without tiring When it contracts, it pumps blood out of your heart and around your body. What is this called?

Question Time What muscle group digest food? What muscles would you need for a squat? Name the three leg muscles? What is the main action for the bicep muscle? How many abdominal muscles do you have? What is the other name for voluntary muscles? Name the upper body muscles?
