2 Diction  Heroic: Having attributes of a hero “The hero arose, surrounded deeply by his thanes” (399-400)  Formidable: Impressive force; someone you shouldn’t mess with. “From their arms of appointment, they appointment, they appear well born and worthy of respect, especially the one who has led them this far: he is a formidable indeed” (368-370)  Courageous: Someone who does something that would frighten others; brave. “The man who’s name is known for courage” (340)

3 Characterization  “The man who’s name was known for courage” (340)  “He moved about like the leader he was” (205-206)  “The great leader, resolute in his helmet” (341)  “When it comes to fighting, I count myself as dangerous any day as Grendel” (677)  “No weapons” (683)  “Worthy of respect” (369)  “May once so valiant and venturesome come unharmed through the clash of battle” (299-300)  “The hero arose, surrounded closely by his powerful thanes” (399-400)  “Nor have I seen a mightier man-at-arms on this earth than the one standing here” (247-249)  “So now, Beowulf, I adopt you in my heart as a dear son. Nourish and maintain this new connection” (946-947)

4 Imagery  Beowulf creates a POSITIVE image  He tries to fight fair, “no weapons, therefore for either this night: unarmed he shall face me if face me he dares” (683-685)  He tries to protect others by fighting Grendel “Now I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in a single combat” (425-427)  Loyal, tried to protect Heorot and requested the king’s permission.

5 Symbolism  Leader  He has a strong influence on his thanes through his accomplishments. “My one request is you won’t refuse me, who have come this far, the privilege on purifying Heorot” (429-431)  Pride  He was dignified after the battle with Grendel.  Very confident before his battle with Grendel? “All knew of my awesome strength. They had seen me bolstered in the blood of enemies when I battled and bound five beast” (419-420)

6 Tone Created  A POSITIVE tone is created  Author makes him the protagonist of the story by making him the character that kills the antagonist (Grendel).  The author also makes Beowulf's character look like a noble and fearless warrior because of how is thanes and other people such as the coast guard respect him.
