Purpose of Writing: Mark’s task is to present Jesus to a largely Gentile audience. Most scholars believe that Mark was in Rome when he wrote the gospel and that his audience was a largely Roman (Gentile) Christian community.

Jesus as the Son of God Mark 1:1 The gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark 1:11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

Mark 2:24, 27-28 The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath” 27 Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." Mark 7:18-19 And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" Place in the Canon: Historically, Mark gives us an insight into the life and times of Jesus. Theologically, Mark demonstrates Jesus’ unique identity and mission. Devotionally, we are led to take Jesus as our Savior and king, who is to be trusted, loved, worshiped and obeyed.
